Remove Black or White Backgrounds in OBS with Luma Key
This article provides a straightforward, step-by-step guide on how to use the Luma Key filter in OBS Studio to eliminate solid black or white backgrounds from graphics, logos, or videos that do not have an alpha channel (transparency). By using this built-in filter, you can easily turn solid backgrounds transparent and seamlessly integrate non-transparent assets into your live stream or recording layouts.
What is a Luma Key?
Unlike a Chroma Key, which removes a specific color (typically green or blue), a Luma Key filters out parts of an image based on brightness (luminance) levels. This makes it the ideal tool for isolating graphics with pure black or pure white backgrounds without affecting the other colors in the image.
Step-by-Step: Adding Luma Key in OBS Studio
Follow these steps to apply and configure the Luma Key filter:
- Add Your Source: Open OBS Studio and add your image, video, or media source to your scene.
- Open Filters: Right-click on the newly added source in the “Sources” dock and select Filters from the context menu.
- Add Luma Key: In the Filters window, click the + (plus) icon in the bottom-left corner under the “Effect Filters” section. Select Luma Key from the list, name the filter, and click OK.
- Adjust the Settings:
- To Remove a Black Background: Gradually increase the Luma Min slider. This tells OBS to make the darkest pixels transparent. Adjust the Luma Min Smooth slider to soften the edges of the key.
- To Remove a White Background: Gradually decrease the Luma Max slider. This tells OBS to make the brightest pixels transparent. Adjust the Luma Max Smooth slider to blend the edges of the keyed image smoothly.
Tips for the Best Results
- High Contrast is Key: The Luma Key works best when there is a distinct contrast between the background you want to remove and the foreground graphics you want to keep.
- Watch Out for Shadows and Highlights: If your graphic contains dark shadows and you are keying out black, those shadows may also become transparent. Fine-tune the Min/Max sliders and Smoothness settings to find the right balance.
- Combine with Crop: If there are borders or unwanted
elements around your graphic, hold the
Altkey (Windows) orOptionkey (Mac) and drag the bounding box handles in the OBS preview window to crop them out before or after applying the filter.
