Remove Black or White Backgrounds in OBS Studio

Removing solid black or white backgrounds from graphics, alerts, or videos in OBS Studio is easily achieved using the Luma Key filter. This guide provides a direct, step-by-step walkthrough on how to apply and configure the Luma Key filter in OBS Studio, allowing you to seamlessly integrate overlays into your live streams or recordings without needing a green screen.

Step 1: Add Your Source to OBS Studio

Before applying the filter, ensure your graphic or video is loaded into your scene: 1. Open OBS Studio. 2. In the Sources dock, click the + (plus) icon. 3. Select the appropriate source type (such as Media Source for videos, Image for static graphics, or Browser for web-based alerts). 4. Locate and select your file, then click OK.

Step 2: Open the Filters Menu

  1. Right-click on the newly added source in the Sources list (or in the preview window).
  2. Click on Filters from the context menu. This will open the Filters window for that specific source.

Step 3: Add the Luma Key Filter

  1. In the Filters window, look at the section labeled Effect Filters on the bottom half of the screen.
  2. Click the + (plus) icon at the bottom of this section.
  3. Select Luma Key from the list of available filters.
  4. Name the filter and click OK.

Step 4: Adjust Settings to Remove the Background

The Luma Key filter targets brightness levels (luminance) to create transparency. Depending on the background color you want to remove, adjust the following sliders:

To Remove a Black Background

  1. Locate the Luma Min slider, which controls the threshold for dark pixels.
  2. Slowly drag the Luma Min slider to the right. You will see the black background begin to disappear.
  3. Adjust the Luma Min Smooth slider to soften the edges of your graphic and eliminate harsh pixelation around the borders.

To Remove a White Background

  1. Locate the Luma Max slider, which controls the threshold for bright pixels.
  2. Slowly drag the Luma Max slider to the left. The white background will start to become transparent.
  3. Adjust the Luma Max Smooth slider to blend the edges smoothly and prevent jagged borders.

Step 5: Fine-Tune and Close

Review the graphic over your main scene to ensure no desired parts of the graphic are accidentally keyed out (for example, white text on a white background might also disappear). If necessary, make micro-adjustments to the sliders. Once you are satisfied with the result, click Close on the Filters window to save your settings.
