Present Slides in Google Meet with OBS Virtual Camera
Using OBS Studio as a virtual camera is one of the best ways to deliver crisp, high-quality slide presentations in Google Meet. By bypassing standard screen sharing, which often compresses text and lowers frame rates, OBS allows you to broadcast your slides directly through your video feed in high definition. This guide provides a straightforward, step-by-step walkthrough on how to set up OBS Studio, import your slides, activate the Virtual Camera, and select it as your primary video source in Google Meet.
Step 1: Prepare Your Slides and OBS Studio
First, open your slide presentation program (such as Google Slides, PowerPoint, or Keynote) and set your presentation to play in a window rather than full screen.
Next, launch OBS Studio. In the Scenes box, click the + icon to create a new scene and name it “Slides.” Move to the Sources box, click the + icon, and select Window Capture. Name the source, select your presentation window from the dropdown list, and click OK. If your slides do not fill the black canvas area in OBS, right-click the source in the preview window, go to Transform, and select Fit to Screen.
Step 2: Activate the OBS Virtual Camera
Once your slides are framed perfectly in the OBS preview canvas, look at the Controls dock located in the bottom-right corner of the OBS interface. Click the button labeled Start Virtual Camera. This action converts your OBS preview canvas into a live camera feed that your web browser and other applications can detect as a physical webcam.
Step 3: Configure Google Meet Settings
Open your web browser and join your Google Meet session. Before or during the call, click the three vertical dots (More Options) at the bottom of the screen and select Settings.
In the Settings menu, click on the Video tab. Under the Camera dropdown menu, select OBS Virtual Camera instead of your default webcam. You should immediately see your OBS slide preview appear in the video box.
Step 4: Maximize Video Resolution
To ensure your audience can read the fine text on your slides, you must adjust Google Meet’s quality settings. While still in the Video settings tab: * Change the Send resolution (maximum) from Auto to High Definition (720p). * Change the Receive resolution (maximum) to High Definition (720p).
These settings force Google Meet to allocate the maximum available bandwidth to your camera feed, ensuring your slides remain sharp.
Important Note on Mirroring
When using the OBS Virtual Camera, your self-view in Google Meet may appear mirrored (backwards) to you. Do not panic; this is a default behavior in Google Meet to make self-view feel more natural. Your audience will see the slides oriented correctly and perfectly readable.
