Install and Configure OBS Advanced Scene Switcher

This guide provides a step-by-step walkthrough on how to install and configure the Advanced Scene Switcher plugin for OBS Studio. You will learn how to download the plugin, install it on your system, and set up automated rules to switch scenes seamlessly based on active windows, timers, or other triggers.

Step 1: Download and Install the Plugin

The Advanced Scene Switcher plugin can be installed on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

  1. Close OBS Studio if it is currently running.
  2. Visit the official OBS Studio Resources website or the plugin’s GitHub repository to download the latest release.
  3. Download the installer compatible with your operating system:
    • Windows: Download the .exe installer for an automatic setup, or the .zip file for a manual installation.
    • macOS: Download the .pkg installer.
  4. Run the installer and follow the on-screen prompts. If you downloaded a .zip file, extract its contents directly into your OBS Studio installation folder (usually C:\Program Files\obs-studio).

Step 2: Access the Plugin in OBS Studio

Once installed, verify that the plugin is active within OBS Studio.

  1. Open OBS Studio.
  2. In the top menu bar, click on Tools.
  3. Select Advanced Scene Switcher from the dropdown menu. If you do not see it, restart your computer or double-check that the files were installed in the correct directory.

Step 3: Configure Your First Automation (Macro)

The modern version of Advanced Scene Switcher uses a powerful “Macro” system based on Conditions (If) and Actions (Then).

To create a basic rule that switches to a specific scene when a particular software or game is in focus:

  1. Open the Advanced Scene Switcher window from the Tools menu.
  2. Navigate to the Macro tab.
  3. Click the + (plus) button at the bottom left to create a new macro and give it a name (e.g., “Switch to Game Scene”).
  4. In the Conditions section (the top area), click the + button.
  5. Set the condition parameters. For example: If -> Window -> [Your Game/Software Executable] -> is in focus.
  6. In the Actions section (the bottom area), click the + button.
  7. Set the action parameters. For example: Then -> Scene -> Switch scene -> [Your desired OBS Scene].

Step 4: Enable the Switcher

By default, the plugin is inactive to prevent accidental scene switching while you are configuring rules.

  1. Navigate to the General tab of the Advanced Scene Switcher window.
  2. Click the Start button to activate the plugin.
  3. The status indicator will change from “Inactive” to “Running”.

You can now minimize the plugin window and test your automation. The plugin will continue to run in the background as long as OBS Studio is open.
