How to View Stream Health and Bitrates in OBS Studio
Monitoring your broadcast’s performance is crucial for maintaining a high-quality livestream. This guide provides a straightforward, step-by-step walkthrough on how to view your stream health, real-time bitrate, dropped frames, and other vital performance metrics directly within the OBS Studio interface.
Method 1: Use the Stats Dock (Recommended)
The Stats dock is the most comprehensive tool in OBS Studio for real-time monitoring. It displays your current bitrate, frame rendering lag, CPU usage, and dropped frames due to network congestion.
- Open OBS Studio.
- In the top menu bar, click on Docs (or View > Docks in older versions).
- Select Stats from the dropdown menu.
- A new window will pop up showing real-time data. You can drag and dock this window anywhere inside your OBS Studio dashboard so it remains visible while you stream.
Method 2: Check the Status Bar
If you prefer a minimalist layout, OBS Studio displays basic real-time stream health at the very bottom right corner of the application window while you are live.
- Status Square: A color-coded square indicates your
overall stream health.
- Green: Your connection is stable, and the bitrate is holding.
- Yellow: Your connection is fluctuating, and OBS is attempting to recover.
- Red: Your connection is poor, and you are likely dropping frames.
- kb/s Counter: Right next to the status square, you will see a real-time counter displaying your exact upload bitrate in kilobits per second.
- FPS & CPU: The status bar also displays your current frames per second (FPS) and CPU utilization to help you identify hardware bottlenecks.
Troubleshooting Stream Health Issues
If you notice your stream health indicator turning yellow or red, or if the Stats dock shows a high number of “Dropped Frames (Network)”:
- Lower your bitrate: Your upload speed may not be able to sustain your current settings. Lower your bitrate in Settings > Output > Streaming.
- Use a wired connection: Always use an Ethernet cable instead of Wi-Fi for streaming to ensure a stable connection.
- Enable Dynamic Bitrate: Go to Settings > Advanced > Network and check Enable network optimizations and Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion. This allows OBS to automatically lower your bitrate rather than dropping frames when your connection dips.
