How to Use OBS Upstream Keyer for Picture-in-Picture
This article provides a step-by-step guide on how to use the Upstream Keyer plugin in OBS Studio to create advanced, multi-layered picture-in-picture (PiP) effects. You will learn how to install the plugin, set up your sources, configure the keyer filters, and arrange multiple video layers to achieve a professional broadcast layout.
Step 1: Install the Upstream Keyer Plugin
Before starting, you must install the Upstream Keyer plugin for OBS Studio.
- Download the Upstream Keyer plugin from the official OBS Project resources website.
- Run the installer or manually extract the zip file contents into your OBS Studio installation directory.
- Restart OBS Studio to ensure the plugin loads correctly.
Step 2: Prepare Your Scene and Sources
To build a multi-layered effect, you need a background layer and at least two additional video sources to act as your picture-in-picture windows.
- In OBS Studio, create a new Scene and name it “Advanced PiP”.
- Under the Sources dock, add your primary background source (such as game capture, a video file, or your desktop).
- Add the sources you want to use for your PiP layers (such as your webcam and a secondary application window).
Step 3: Apply the Upstream Keyer Filter
Unlike standard OBS sources that you resize manually on the canvas, the Upstream Keyer controls layers via filters to allow for advanced transitions and precise placement.
- Right-click on your first PiP source (e.g., your webcam) in the Sources list and select Filters.
- Click the + icon under the Effect Filters section.
- Select Upstream Keyer from the dropdown menu and click OK.
Step 4: Configure the PiP Layers
With the filter applied, you can now define the layout, size, and mask for your multi-layered effect.
- Adjust Position and Scale: Use the sliders in the Upstream Keyer filter properties to set the X and Y coordinates, as well as the scale of the source. Position this source in your desired corner of the screen.
- Apply Cropping: Use the built-in crop settings within the filter to trim the edges of your video source to fit your layout.
- Configure the Second Layer: Repeat Step 3 and the positioning steps for your second PiP source. Position this layer adjacent to or overlapping the first layer to create a layered, modern aesthetic.
Step 5: Set Up Transitions and Controls
The Upstream Keyer allows you to smoothly transition these layers on and off the screen.
- Inside the Upstream Keyer filter settings, locate the Transition options.
- Choose a transition style (such as Slide, Fade, or Zoom) and set the duration in milliseconds.
- Assign hotkeys in the OBS Settings > Hotkeys menu to toggle the visibility of each Upstream Keyer layer, allowing you to bring layers in and out of your live broadcast dynamically.
