How to Use OBS Sharpness Filter for Legible Text

When capturing windows in OBS Studio, video compression and scaling can often render text blurry, pixelated, or difficult to read for your viewers. This guide provides a straightforward, step-by-step walkthrough on how to apply and configure the “Sharpness” filter on a Window Capture source to restore text clarity and make your stream or recording look professional.

Steps to Make Text Legible in OBS Studio

Step 1: Open the Filters Menu

  1. Launch OBS Studio and locate the Sources dock at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Right-click on your Window Capture source (or the specific source containing the blurry text).
  3. Select Filters from the context menu. This will open a new properties window.

Step 2: Add the Sharpness Filter

  1. In the Filters window, look at the bottom-left section labeled Effect Filters.
  2. Click the + (plus) icon at the bottom of this section.
  3. Select Sharpness from the dropdown list.
  4. Type a name for the filter (e.g., “Text Sharpener”) and click OK.

Step 3: Adjust the Sharpness Slider

  1. Position the Filters window so you can clearly see the preview screen in OBS Studio.
  2. Locate the Sharpness slider in the filter settings. The default value is usually set to 0.08.
  3. Slowly drag the slider to the right to increase sharpness.
  4. Watch the preview window closely as you adjust:
    • Too low (below 0.10): The text may remain blurry.
    • Optimal range (0.10 to 0.30): The edges of the letters will become defined, crisp, and legible.
    • Too high (above 0.40): The text may develop “halos,” visual noise, or look jagged and over-processed.
  5. Once the text looks clear and readable, click Close.

Additional Tip for Clean Text

If the text still looks slightly distorted after applying the Sharpness filter, check your source scaling: 1. Right-click the Window Capture source. 2. Hover over Scale Filtering. 3. Change the setting from Disable to Bicubic or Lanczos. This improves how OBS resizes the window before the Sharpness filter is applied.
