How to Use OBS Replay Buffer to Save Clips

The Replay Buffer in OBS Studio is a powerful tool that allows creators to capture and save the last few seconds or minutes of their live stream or recording at the touch of a button. This article provides a straightforward, step-by-step guide on how to enable, configure, and use the Replay Buffer to seamlessly save high-quality gaming clips and memorable moments without constantly recording.

Step 1: Enable the Replay Buffer

To start using the Replay Buffer, you must first enable it within your OBS Studio settings: 1. Open OBS Studio and click on Settings in the bottom-right corner. 2. In the Settings menu, navigate to the Output tab on the left. 3. Change the Output Mode at the top of the window to Advanced (if it is set to Simple, you can still enable it under the “Enable Replay Buffer” checkbox in the Recording section). 4. Click on the Replay Buffer tab. 5. Check the box that says Enable Replay Buffer.

Step 2: Set the Buffer Time and Save Location

Once enabled, you need to decide how far back you want your clips to go: 1. In the Maximum Replay Time field, enter the number of seconds you want to save when you trigger a clip (for example, 30 seconds, 60 seconds, or 120 seconds). Keep in mind that longer replay times will consume more of your computer’s RAM. 2. Navigate to the Recording tab within the same Output menu. 3. Check the Recording Path to ensure you know where your saved clips will be stored on your computer. 4. Click Apply at the bottom of the window.

Step 3: Configure Hotkeys

To save clips instantly during gameplay, you should map a shortcut key: 1. Navigate to the Hotkeys tab on the left menu. 2. Scroll down or use the search bar to find the Replay Buffer section. 3. Locate the Save Replay action and click in the empty field next to it. 4. Press the key combination you wish to use as your clip shortcut (for example, Ctrl + F12). 5. Click OK to save your settings and close the window.

Step 4: Start and Save Clips

With your settings configured, you can now start capturing clips during your sessions: 1. In the main OBS Studio window, look at the Controls dock in the bottom-right. 2. Click the Start Replay Buffer button. (You can also set OBS to automatically start the Replay Buffer whenever you start streaming by going to Settings > General > Output). 3. While gaming or streaming, whenever something exciting happens, press your designated Save Replay hotkey. 4. A download icon will briefly appear in the status bar at the bottom of OBS, confirming that the replay has been saved directly to your recording folder.
