How to Use OBS 3D Transform for Skewed Layouts
Using the “3D Transform” filter plugin in OBS Studio is an excellent way to add depth and a modern, angled aesthetic to your stream layout. This guide provides a direct, step-by-step walkthrough on how to install the plugin, apply the filter to your sources, and adjust the 3D rotation and perspective settings to create a professional skewed effect for your webcam or gameplay capture.
Step 1: Install the 3D Transform Plugin
Before opening OBS Studio, you must install the “3D Transform” plugin. Download the plugin installer or zip file from the official OBS Resources website. Close OBS Studio, run the installer (or extract the files directly into your OBS Studio installation folder), and then relaunch OBS Studio to load the plugin.
Step 2: Apply the 3D Transform Filter
- In OBS Studio, locate the Sources dock and select the source you want to skew (e.g., your webcam, gameplay capture, or overlay).
- Right-click the source and select Filters.
- In the Filters window, click the + (plus) icon in the bottom-left corner under the Effect Filters section.
- Select 3D Transform from the list, give the filter a name, and click OK.
Step 3: Configure the Perspective Settings
To achieve a skewed, three-dimensional look, you need to adjust the filter’s camera and rotation settings in the properties window:
- Camera Mode: Change this setting from Orthographic to Perspective. Perspective mode is essential because it scales the edges of the source relative to their distance from the viewer, creating a realistic sense of depth.
- Field of View (FOV): Set this between 50 and 90. A higher FOV exaggerates the 3D effect, making the skewed edges look more dramatic.
- Rotation (Yaw/Pitch/Roll): To skew the source horizontally (angling it left or right), adjust the Y-axis (Yaw) slider. A value of 15 to 30 degrees usually delivers a clean, visible tilt without distorting the content too much. To tilt the source vertically (angling it forward or backward), adjust the X-axis (Pitch) slider.
- Position (Z-Axis): Use the Z-position slider to move the source closer or further away. This helps you resize the skewed source to fit your overall scene composition.
Step 4: Position and Crop the Source on Your Canvas
Once you are satisfied with the 3D angle, close the Filters window. On your main OBS canvas, you will see the skewed source with a red bounding box.
Because 3D rotation alters the boundaries of the source, hold the Alt key while dragging the sides of the red bounding box to crop out any empty space around your newly skewed layer. Finally, click and drag the source to position it into your stream overlay layout.
