How to Use Move Transition in OBS Studio
Creating professional-looking scene transitions in OBS Studio can significantly elevate your stream’s production value. This guide will show you how to install and configure the “Move Transition” plugin to create seamless, sliding animations for layout shifts, source movements, and camera transitions without needing complex video editing software.
Step 1: Install the Move Transition Plugin
Before starting, you must install the plugin. Go to the OBS Studio Resources website, search for the “Move Transition” plugin by Exeldro, and download the latest version. Run the installer or manually extract the zip files into your OBS Studio installation directory, then restart OBS.
Step 2: Set Up Your Scenes
For the transition to work, you need two scenes that contain the same source (such as your webcam or gameplay capture) but in different positions or sizes. 1. Create a scene named Scene A and position your webcam in the bottom-right corner. 2. Duplicate this scene and name it Scene B. 3. In Scene B, move and resize the webcam to the top-left corner.
Because the webcam source has the exact same name in both scenes, the plugin will recognize it and animate the shift.
Step 3: Add the Move Transition
Next, you need to apply the transition effect to your scene switches. 1. Locate the Scene Transitions dock in OBS. 2. Click the drop-down menu (which usually defaults to “Fade” or “Cut”) and select Add: Move. 3. Name your transition (e.g., “Smooth Slide”) and click OK.
Step 4: Configure the Transition Settings
Once added, the properties window for the Move transition will appear. Adjust these settings for the best results: * Matched Sources: Set this to Move. This ensures that any source existing in both the starting and ending scenes will smoothly glide to its new position. * Duration: Set this between 500ms and 1000ms. A duration of 700ms is generally the sweet spot for a transition that feels fast yet smooth. * Easing: Change this to Ease In/Out. This makes the source accelerate gently at the start and decelerate smoothly at the end, rather than moving at a constant, mechanical speed. * Easing Function: Select Cubic or Quadratic for a natural-looking curve.
Click OK to save the settings.
Step 5: Test and Refine
With the “Smooth Slide” transition selected in your Scene Transitions dock, click back and forth between Scene A and Scene B. Your webcam should now slide and resize smoothly across the screen.
If any sources fade out instead of sliding, double-check that the source names are identical in both scenes. Non-matching sources will use the “Transition fallback” setting (usually a simple fade) which you can also customize in the Move properties window.
