How to Use Luma Key in OBS to Remove Backgrounds
Using animated graphics with solid black or white backgrounds can clutter your stream layouts in OBS Studio. This guide provides a straightforward, step-by-step walkthrough on how to use the “Luma Key” filter in OBS Studio to instantly remove these backgrounds, allowing your overlays, alerts, and animations to blend seamlessly into your broadcast.
Step 1: Add Your Animated Graphic
First, import your graphic into OBS Studio. Go to the Sources dock at the bottom of the screen, click the + (plus) icon, and select Media Source (for MP4 or WebM files) or Image (for GIFs). Browse to locate your file, check the Loop option if you want the animation to repeat continuously, and click OK.
Step 2: Open the Filters Menu
Right-click on your newly added source in the Sources list and select Filters from the context menu. This will open a new configuration window where you can apply visual effects to your graphic.
Step 3: Add the Luma Key Filter
In the Filters window, look at the bottom section labeled Effect Filters. Click the + icon in the bottom-left corner of this section and select Luma Key from the list. You can leave the name as default or rename it, then click OK.
Step 4: Configure the Luma Key Settings
Luma Key works by filtering out pixels based on their brightness (luminance). Depending on the color of your background, adjust the sliders as follows:
- To Remove a Black Background: Gradually drag the Luma Min slider to the right. This setting controls the minimum brightness threshold; raising it will make the darkest areas of the graphic transparent. Stop sliding once the black background completely disappears. If the edges of your graphic look jagged, slightly increase the Luma Min Smooth slider to soften the transition.
- To Remove a White Background: Gradually drag the Luma Max slider to the left. This setting controls the maximum brightness threshold; lowering it will make the brightest areas transparent. Stop sliding once the white background is fully keyed out. Adjust the Luma Max Smooth slider to clean up any remaining bright halos around your animation.
Once the background is gone and the edges look clean, click Close at the bottom of the Filters window. Your animated graphic will now display with a transparent background directly over your stream layout.
