How to Use Bluetooth Microphone in OBS Studio
Using a Bluetooth headset microphone with OBS Studio can sometimes be tricky due to how operating systems handle wireless audio profiles. This guide provides a straightforward, step-by-step walkthrough to configure your computer’s audio settings and OBS Studio properties so you can reliably capture clear voice audio from your wireless headset during streams or recordings.
Step 1: Connect Your Bluetooth Headset to Your Computer
Before launching OBS Studio, ensure your Bluetooth headset is paired, connected, and active on your computer.
- On Windows: Go to Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices and confirm your headset is connected.
- On Mac: Go to System Settings > Bluetooth and ensure your headset is active.
Step 2: Set the Correct Audio Profile (Windows)
Bluetooth devices on Windows typically use two different profiles: Stereo (high-quality audio, output only) and Hands-Free AG Audio (lower-quality audio, output + microphone input).
To use the microphone, Windows must activate the Hands-Free profile. 1. Right-click the Speaker icon in your Windows system tray and select Sound settings (or Sounds on older versions). 2. Go to the Input section and ensure your Bluetooth headset’s “Hands-Free” option is selected as your default input device.
(Note: When the microphone is active, your headset’s headphone audio quality may temporarily drop to mono/low-bandwidth due to Bluetooth limitations.)
Step 3: Add the Bluetooth Microphone in OBS Studio
There are two ways to add your Bluetooth microphone to OBS Studio: as a Global Audio Device or as an individual Source. Using an individual Source is recommended for better control.
Method A: Add as an Audio Input Capture Source (Recommended)
- Open OBS Studio.
- Go to the Sources dock at the bottom of the screen.
- Click the + (plus) icon and select Audio Input Capture.
- Name the source (e.g., “Bluetooth Headset Mic”) and click OK.
- In the Device dropdown menu, select your Bluetooth headset microphone (look for “Hands-Free” or your device’s name).
- Click OK.
Method B: Add as a Global Audio Device
- In OBS Studio, click Settings (located in the bottom-right Controls dock).
- Click on the Audio tab in the left sidebar.
- Under the Global Audio Devices section, find Mic/Auxiliary Audio.
- Click the dropdown menu next to it and select your Bluetooth headset microphone.
- Click Apply and then OK.
Step 4: Verify and Monitor Your Audio
Once added, look at the Audio Mixer dock in OBS Studio. Speak into your headset microphone; you should see the green, yellow, and red volume bar moving in response to your voice.
If the bar does not move: * Verify that your headset is not physically muted. * Go back to your computer’s system sound settings to ensure the microphone input volume is turned up. * Restart OBS Studio to allow the software to refresh its connection to your Bluetooth hardware.
