How to Transition Scenes in OBS Studio

Creating seamless transitions between scenes in OBS Studio is essential for producing a professional-looking live stream or video recording. This article will guide you through the process of setting up and customizing scene transitions, including using standard transitions like fades, creating custom stinger transitions, utilizing Studio Mode for pre-production previews, and setting up hotkeys to execute transitions flawlessly.

Use the Scene Transitions Dock

By default, OBS Studio includes a “Scene Transitions” dock located at the bottom of the interface. This control center allows you to manage how one scene cuts or fades into another.

To use it: 1. Locate the Scene Transitions dock. 2. Click the dropdown menu to select your desired transition (e.g., Cut or Fade). 3. Set the Duration in milliseconds (ms) to control how quickly the transition occurs (300ms is a standard, natural-looking speed for fades).

Explore Transition Types

If you want more variety than a simple cut or fade, you can add different transition styles to your list:

To add these, click the Plus (+) icon in the Scene Transitions dock, select your preferred transition type, name it, and customize its specific settings (such as direction for swipes).

Create Professional Stinger Transitions

A stinger transition is a custom video animation with transparent elements that covers the screen momentarily while the scene changes beneath it. This is the industry standard for gaming streams and professional broadcasts.

To set up a stinger transition: 1. Click the Plus (+) icon in the Scene Transitions dock and select Stinger. 2. Name your transition and click OK. 3. In the properties window, browse and select your video file (usually in .webm format to support transparency). 4. Set the Transition Point Type to either “Time” (milliseconds) or “Frame”. 5. Adjust the Transition Point to the exact moment the animation completely obscures the screen. 6. Scroll down to preview the transition to ensure the underlying scene changes right when the screen is fully covered by the animation. Click OK to save.

Enable Studio Mode for Seamless Previews

For live broadcasts, transitioning blindly can lead to mistakes. OBS Studio solves this with Studio Mode, which splits your screen into two windows: Preview (left) and Program (right).

  1. Click the Studio Mode button on the right side of the OBS window under the Controls dock.
  2. Select your next scene in the Scenes dock; it will appear in the Preview window on the left without your viewers seeing it.
  3. Prepare your sources, adjust audio, or reposition assets in the Preview window.
  4. Click the Transition button located between the two screens (or use a quick-transition button) to seamlessly push the previewed scene to the live Program window.

Assign Hotkeys for Speed

To transition between scenes without clicking around the OBS interface, you can map transitions to your keyboard or an external control deck.

  1. Go to Settings > Hotkeys.
  2. Scroll down to find the transition controls (such as “Quick Transition” or specific scene names).
  3. Click the empty field next to the action and press the key combination you want to use.
  4. Click Apply and OK. Now, you can execute smooth transitions instantly at the press of a button.
