How to Setup Green Screen Stinger Transition in OBS
Using a green screen video clip as a stinger transition in OBS Studio is an excellent way to add professional, dynamic scene changes to your live stream. This guide provides a straightforward, step-by-step walkthrough on how to prepare your green screen video, configure it as a stinger transition, and set the precise cut point timing to ensure seamless scene changes.
Step 1: Convert Your Green Screen Video to Transparent WebM
Because OBS Studio does not allow you to apply video filters (like Chroma Key) directly to transition files, you must first convert your green screen video into a transparent format.
- Open your preferred video editing software (such as DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro, or CapCut).
- Import your green screen transition clip.
- Apply a Chroma Key or Ultra Key filter to remove the green background.
- Export the video as a WebM file with the Alpha Channel enabled to preserve transparency. If WebM is not an option, export as a QuickTime (.mov) file with Alpha enabled.
Step 2: Add a Stinger Transition in OBS Studio
Once you have your transparent video file, you can set it up inside OBS.
- Locate the Scene Transitions dock in OBS Studio.
- Click the dropdown menu that currently says “Fade” or “Cut” and select Add: Stinger.
- Name your new transition (e.g., “Custom Stinger”) and click OK.
Step 3: Configure the Stinger Properties
In the properties window that appears, you will link your video file and configure the settings.
- Video File: Click Browse and select your transparent WebM or MOV transition file.
- Transition Point Type: Set this to Time (milliseconds).
- Transition Point: Enter the exact millisecond value
where the animation completely covers the screen. For example, if the
screen is fully obscured 1.5 seconds into the video, enter
1500. - Audio Monitoring: If your transition has sound, set this to Monitor and Output so both you and your viewers can hear it.
- Audio Fade Style: Choose Crossfade for a smooth audio transition between scenes.
Step 4: Test and Fine-Tune the Timing
To ensure the transition looks seamless, you must test the cut timing.
- Scroll to the bottom of the Stinger properties window and click Preview Transition.
- Watch the preview carefully. If you see the underlying scene switch before the animation fully covers the screen, increase the Transition Point millisecond value.
- If the scene switches too late after the animation has already started clearing, decrease the millisecond value.
- Once the transition is perfectly timed, click OK.
