How to Set Up Scene Transition Overrides in OBS Studio

This guide provides a straightforward, step-by-step tutorial on how to set up custom transition overrides for specific scenes in OBS Studio. By default, OBS uses a global transition when switching between scenes, but you can assign unique transitions—such as stingers, fades, or cuts—to individual scenes to give your live streams and recordings a more professional and dynamic look.

Step 1: Locate the Scenes Dock

Open OBS Studio on your computer. In the main user interface, look for the Scenes dock, which is typically located in the bottom-left corner of the screen. This panel lists all the scenes you have created for your stream or recording.

Step 2: Access the Transition Override Menu

Find the specific scene you want to assign a unique transition to. Right-click on the name of that scene to open its context menu. From the dropdown list, hover your mouse over the Transition Override option.

Step 3: Select Your Custom Transition

A sub-menu will appear listing all the transitions currently available in your OBS Studio installation (such as Cut, Fade, Swipe, Slide, or any custom Stinger transitions you have previously imported).

Once selected, this specific transition will trigger every time you switch to this scene, regardless of what global transition is set in the “Scene Transitions” dock.

Step 4: Test the Override

To ensure the transition override is working correctly, click on a different scene, and then click back to the scene with the override. You should see your newly selected transition play instead of the default global transition.

How to Remove a Transition Override

If you ever want to revert the scene back to using the global transition, right-click the scene, hover over Transition Override, and select None. This will clear the override and restore the default settings.
