How to Set Up a Stinger Transition with Audio in OBS

Adding a professional touch to your livestreams is easy with custom transitions. This guide provides a step-by-step walkthrough on how to set up a “Stinger” transition in OBS Studio, complete with synchronized audio sound effects, ensuring seamless and engaging scene switches for your viewers.

Step 1: Prepare Your Stinger Video File

Before configuring OBS, ensure your transition video is ready. * File Format: Use WebM or MOV format. WebM is highly recommended because it supports transparent backgrounds (alpha channel) and has a small file size. * Audio: The sound effect must be embedded directly into the video file itself.

Step 2: Add a New Stinger Transition in OBS

  1. Locate the Scene Transitions dock in OBS Studio (usually next to the Scenes and Sources docks).
  2. Click the drop-down menu that defaults to “Cut” or “Fade” and select Add: Stinger.
  3. Name your transition (e.g., “Stinger with Audio”) and click OK.

Step 3: Configure the Video and Transition Point

A properties window will appear. Configure the following settings: 1. Video File: Click Browse and select your WebM or MOV transition file. 2. Transition Point Type: Choose Time (milliseconds) or Frame. 3. Transition Point: This is the exact moment the transition video completely covers the screen. Enter the time in milliseconds (e.g., if the screen is fully covered at exactly 1 second, enter 1000). This ensures the scene changes invisibly behind your transition.

Step 4: Configure the Audio Settings

To ensure the transition sound effect plays correctly for both you and your stream audience, adjust the audio settings in the same properties window: 1. Audio Fade Style: Set this to Crossfade (smooth audio blending between scenes) or Fade out to transition point then fade in (cuts the old scene audio at the transition peak). 2. Audio Monitoring: Select Monitor and Output. This ensures that you can hear the sound effect in your headphones (Monitor) and your viewers can hear it on the stream (Output).

Click OK to save the settings.

Step 5: Test and Fine-Tune

  1. In the Scene Transitions dock, make sure your new Stinger transition is selected as the active transition.
  2. Click between two different scenes in your Scenes dock to trigger the transition.
  3. If the audio or video cuts too early or too late, right-click your transition in the Scene Transitions dock, select Properties, and adjust the Transition Point millisecond value until the switch is perfectly seamless.
