How to Remove Green Screen in OBS Studio

Using a green screen in OBS Studio allows you to create a professional broadcast by removing your physical background and replacing it with gameplay, presentations, or digital backdrops. This guide provides a straightforward, step-by-step walkthrough on how to apply and configure the Chroma Key filter in OBS Studio to quickly achieve a clean, transparent background.

Step 1: Add Your Video Capture Device

Before applying the filter, ensure your camera is set up as a source in OBS Studio. 1. Open OBS Studio. 2. Go to the Sources dock at the bottom of the screen. 3. Click the + (plus) icon and select Video Capture Device. 4. Name your device, select your webcam or camera from the dropdown menu, and click OK.

Step 2: Access the Filters Menu

To apply the chroma key, you need to open the effects filters for your camera source. 1. Right-click on your video source in the Sources list (or right-click directly on the camera preview on your screen). 2. Select Filters from the context menu. This will open a new properties window.

Step 3: Add the Chroma Key Filter

The chroma key effect is categorized as an effect filter in OBS. 1. In the Filters window, look at the bottom-left section labeled Effect Filters. 2. Click the + (plus) icon at the bottom of this section. 3. Select Chroma Key from the list of available filters. 4. Keep the default name or type a custom name, then click OK.

Step 4: Adjust the Chroma Key Settings

OBS Studio will automatically apply default settings which usually remove most of the green screen immediately. To perfect the edge detail and transparency, adjust the following sliders:

Once the preview window shows a clean gray-and-black checkerboard pattern where your green screen used to be, click Close at the bottom right of the Filters window. Your background is now transparent, and you can place any source, such as a game capture or image, directly beneath your camera source in the list to act as your new background.
