How to Loop a Seamless Background in OBS Studio

Using a moving background can bring energy and professionalism to your live streams or video recordings. This guide provides a straightforward, step-by-step walkthrough on how to use the Scroll filter in OBS Studio to turn any tileable, seamless image into a continuously looping background. You will learn how to import your image, apply the filter, and configure the settings to achieve a smooth, distraction-free motion effect.

Step 1: Prepare Your Image

Before opening OBS Studio, ensure you have a seamless (tileable) image. A seamless image is designed so that its left edge perfectly matches its right edge, and its top edge matches its bottom edge. If the image is not seamless, you will see a visible seam or line break as it loops.

Step 2: Add the Image to OBS Studio

  1. Launch OBS Studio.
  2. Go to the Sources dock at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Click the + (Add) icon and select Image.
  4. Name the source (e.g., “Scrolling Background”) and click OK.
  5. Click Browse, locate your seamless image file on your computer, and click Open.
  6. Click OK to add the image to your canvas.

Step 3: Apply the Scroll Filter

  1. Right-click on your newly added Image source in the Sources list.
  2. Select Filters from the context menu.
  3. In the Filters window, click the + (Add) icon in the bottom-left corner under the “Effect Filters” section.
  4. Select Scroll from the list.
  5. Give the filter a name (or leave it as “Scroll”) and click OK.

Step 4: Configure the Scroll Settings

To make the background loop seamlessly, adjust the following settings in the Scroll filter properties:

Step 5: Save and Position

  1. Once you are happy with the speed and direction of the movement, click Close on the Filters window.
  2. If you did not limit the width and height in the filter settings, you can manually resize the image source on your canvas by dragging its red outer corners to fit your screen.
  3. In the Sources dock, drag your scrolling background source to the very bottom of the list so it sits behind your camera feed, gameplay, and overlays.
