How to Fix Webcam Exposure Flickering in OBS Studio
If your webcam constantly shifts between bright and dark exposure levels in OBS Studio, it is because the camera’s automatic exposure setting is continuously adjusting to minor changes in lighting. This article explains why this flickering happens and provides a direct, step-by-step guide on how to disable auto-exposure and lock your settings for a consistent, professional video feed.
Why Your Webcam Exposure Flickers
Webcams are designed to adapt to changing environments. By default, they use Auto-Exposure to analyze the incoming light and adjust the brightness of the image.
In a typical streaming or recording setup, the light reflecting off your face constantly changes—usually due to movement, shifting background light, or the changing brightness of your computer monitors. When the camera detects these tiny shifts, it automatically recalibrates, causing the sudden, distracting jumps in brightness known as exposure flickering.
How to Lock Your Webcam Exposure in OBS Studio
To stop the flickering, you must disable the camera’s automatic adjustments and set a fixed, manual exposure value.
Step 1: Open Video Capture Device Properties
- Launch OBS Studio.
- Go to the Sources dock.
- Double-click your webcam source (usually named Video Capture Device), or right-click it and select Properties.
Step 2: Access the Camera’s Driver Settings
- In the Properties window, scroll down and click the Configure Video button.
- This will open a separate properties window provided by your webcam’s manufacturer (such as Logitech, Razer, or Elgato).
Step 3: Disable Auto-Exposure
- In the new window, click on the Camera Control tab (if available; otherwise, look for “Exposure” on the main tab).
- Locate the Exposure setting.
- Uncheck the Auto box next to Exposure. This locks the exposure value in place.
Step 4: Manually Adjust the Slider
- Manually drag the Exposure slider until your video looks natural and properly lit.
- Note: Setting the exposure too low will make the image dark, while setting it too high can lower your webcam’s frame rate (FPS) and introduce motion blur. For the smoothest video, keep the exposure value as low as possible and compensate by increasing your physical room lighting.
- Uncheck any other automatic settings that might cause flickering, such as Auto White Balance or Low Light Compensation.
Step 5: Save Your Settings
- Click Apply, then click OK to close the camera settings window.
- Click OK on the OBS Properties window to save the changes.
By locking these settings, your webcam will maintain a constant brightness level, completely eliminating exposure flickering regardless of monitor glare or movement.
