How to Fix OBS Hotkeys Not Working in Background
When streaming or recording with OBS Studio, hotkeys are essential for managing your broadcast without interrupting your workflow. However, if OBS Studio is not the active window, these hotkeys may stop working or fail to register because of operating system restrictions, privilege conflicts, or incorrect software settings. This article provides a direct, step-by-step guide on how to configure OBS Studio to ensure your hotkeys always work, even when the software is minimized or running in the background.
Adjust Hotkey Focus Behavior in OBS Settings
OBS Studio includes a built-in setting that dictates how hotkeys behave when the application window is out of focus. You must ensure this is set to allow background inputs.
- Open OBS Studio.
- Click on Settings in the bottom-right Controls panel, or go to File > Settings in the top menu.
- In the left sidebar, click on the Advanced tab.
- Scroll down to the Hotkeys section.
- Locate the Hotkey Focus Behavior dropdown menu.
- Select Never discard hotkeys. This option ensures OBS registers your keybinds even when you are actively using another program or game.
- Click Apply and then OK to save the changes.
Run OBS Studio as an Administrator
Even with the correct settings enabled inside OBS, Windows security protocols may prevent background applications from capturing keyboard inputs if you are running a game or another program with elevated privileges. Running OBS as an administrator bypasses this restriction.
- Close OBS Studio completely.
- Right-click the OBS Studio shortcut on your desktop or in your Start menu.
- Select Properties.
- Navigate to the Compatibility tab.
- Under the Settings section, check the box next to Run this program as an administrator.
- Click Apply and then OK.
Now, whenever you launch OBS Studio, it will run with the administrative permissions required to capture your global hotkeys while you are active in other windows.
Avoid Conflicting Keybinds and System Shortcuts
If your hotkeys still do not register, the active window (such as a video game or a creative application) might have higher input priority or be overriding the keys you chose.
- Use Multi-Key Combinations: Avoid assigning simple,
single-key hotkeys (like
F12orNumPad 1) that are frequently claimed by other software. Instead, use combinations likeCtrl + Shift + F12orAlt + Home. - Disable Game Mode Overrides: Some games have built-in security features (like anti-cheat software) or overlay settings that block third-party background hooks. Changing your hotkeys to less common key combinations usually resolves these conflicts.
