How to Fix OBS Game Capture Black Screen
Getting a black screen when using the Game Capture source in OBS Studio is a common issue that usually occurs due to software conflicts, permission restrictions, or incorrect graphics settings. This article explains the primary causes behind this problem—such as lack of administrator privileges, multi-GPU conflicts, and incompatible display modes—and provides straightforward, step-by-step solutions to resolve them quickly.
Run OBS Studio as Administrator
Many modern games run with elevated privileges to prevent cheating and optimize performance. If OBS Studio does not have the same level of authorization, it will be blocked from hooking into the game window, resulting in a black screen.
- Close OBS Studio completely.
- Right-click the OBS Studio shortcut on your desktop or in the Start menu.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Launch your game and check if the Game Capture source is now working.
To make this change permanent, right-click the OBS shortcut, go to Properties > Compatibility, check the box for Run this program as an administrator, and click Apply.
Match GPU Settings (Laptop Users)
If you are using a laptop with dual graphics cards (an integrated Intel/AMD CPU chip and a dedicated NVIDIA/AMD GPU), OBS and your game might be running on different processors. They must run on the same graphics card for Game Capture to function.
- Open the Windows Settings menu and navigate to System > Display > Graphics.
- Locate OBS Studio in the list (if it is not there,
click Browse and find the
obs64.exefile). - Click on OBS Studio and select Options.
- Set the graphics preference to High performance (this forces OBS to use your dedicated GPU, which games also use).
- Save the settings and restart OBS.
Change the Game’s Display Mode
Some games utilize rendering engines that prevent external software from capturing them in exclusive fullscreen mode.
- Open the in-game video/graphics settings.
- Change the display mode from Fullscreen to Borderless Windowed or Windowed.
- In OBS, double-click your Game Capture source and ensure the Mode is set to Capture any fullscreen application or Capture specific window (and select your game from the list).
Enable Anti-Cheat Compatibility Hook
Certain games employ strict anti-cheat systems that block OBS from hooking into the game engine. OBS has a built-in feature to bypass this safely.
- Double-click your Game Capture source in the OBS Sources list to open its properties.
- Scroll down and check the box next to Use anti-cheat compatibility hook.
- Click OK and restart both the game and OBS.
Disable Conflicting Overlays
Third-party software overlays can conflict with the OBS hook mechanism. If you are running overlays, disable them one by one to find the culprit. Common overlays include:
- Discord Overlay
- Steam Overlay
- GeForce Experience In-Game Overlay
- AMD Radeon Software Overlay
Alternative: Use Window Capture
If a specific game refuses to work with Game Capture due to strict engine limitations (such as Destiny 2 or Counter-Strike 2), you can use Window Capture as a reliable workaround.
- In OBS, click the + icon in the Sources dock.
- Select Window Capture and click OK.
- Set the Window dropdown to your running game.
- Set the Capture Method to Windows 10 (1903 and up) for the best performance and compatibility.
