How to Fix Invisible Mouse Cursor in OBS Window Capture

If your mouse cursor is missing or invisible when using the Window Capture source in OBS Studio, you are not alone. This common issue usually stems from disabled capture settings, incorrect capture methods, or hardware acceleration conflicts with the application you are trying to record. This guide provides quick, step-by-step solutions to restore your cursor’s visibility in OBS Studio immediately.

1. Enable “Capture Cursor” in OBS Source Settings

The most common reason for a missing cursor is that the setting has been accidentally disabled within the specific Window Capture source.

  1. Open OBS Studio.
  2. Go to the Sources dock at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Double-click on your active Window Capture source to open its properties.
  4. Locate the checkbox labeled Capture Cursor.
  5. Check this box to enable it.
  6. Click OK to save the changes.

2. Change the Capture Method

By default, OBS uses an automatic capture method that may fail to render the mouse pointer depending on the application you are capturing. Switching the capture graphics API often resolves the issue.

  1. Double-click your Window Capture source to open its properties.
  2. Find the dropdown menu next to Capture Method.
  3. Change it from Automatic to Windows 10 (1903 and up). If you are on an older operating system, try BitBlt.
  4. Click OK and check if your cursor is now visible in the preview window.

3. Disable Hardware Acceleration in the Target App

If you are capturing a web browser (like Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Mozilla Firefox), Discord, or Spotify, these applications use hardware acceleration which can mask the mouse cursor in screen recorders.

  1. Open the settings menu of the application you are capturing.
  2. Search for Hardware Acceleration in the app’s search bar.
  3. Toggle the option to Off or Disabled.
  4. Relaunch the application and check OBS Studio.

4. Run OBS Studio as an Administrator

Running OBS without administrative privileges can prevent it from properly capturing overlay elements like system cursors, especially when capturing high-privilege applications or games.

  1. Close OBS Studio completely.
  2. Right-click on the OBS Studio shortcut icon on your desktop or Start Menu.
  3. Select Run as administrator.
  4. To make this permanent, right-click the shortcut, select Properties, go to the Compatibility tab, check Run this program as an administrator, and click Apply.

5. Update Your Graphics Drivers

Outdated display drivers can cause rendering glitches between Windows and OBS Studio.

  1. Right-click the Windows Start button and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand the Display adapters section.
  3. Right-click your primary graphics card (NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel) and select Update driver.
  4. Choose Search automatically for drivers or download the latest drivers directly from the manufacturer’s website.
  5. Restart your computer after the installation is complete.
