How to Fit Window Capture to Screen in OBS
When capturing windows in OBS Studio, sources can often become oversized, cut off, or misaligned on your canvas. This quick guide explains how to instantly reset and resize any bloated window capture using the “Fit to screen” keyboard shortcut, ensuring your stream or recording layout remains perfectly framed.
The Instant Keyboard Shortcut
The fastest way to fix an oversized window capture is by using a hotkey combination.
- Click on the oversized Window Capture source in your OBS Sources list (or click on the source directly in the preview window).
- Press Ctrl + F on Windows/Linux, or Cmd + F on macOS.
This command instantly resizes the selected source to fit within the boundaries of your current canvas while fully maintaining the window’s original aspect ratio.
Alternative Method: Using the Right-Click Menu
If you prefer using your mouse, you can achieve the exact same result through the OBS context menu:
- Right-click the oversized window capture in the preview window or the Sources dock.
- Hover your mouse over Transform in the drop-down menu.
- Click on Fit to screen.
Fit to Screen vs. Stretch to Screen
While “Fit to screen” is the best option for preserving the proportions of your captured window, you may sometimes want the source to fill the entire canvas even if it distorts the image.
- Fit to screen (Ctrl + F): Scales the window to the maximum possible size within the canvas boundaries without stretching or distorting the image. This may leave black bars on the sides or top if the aspect ratios do not match.
- Stretch to screen (Ctrl + S): Forces the window capture to stretch and fill the entire canvas, ignoring the original aspect ratio.
