How to Create Rolling Credits in OBS Studio
This guide provides a step-by-step walkthrough on how to create a professional, vertical rolling credits screen natively in OBS Studio using the built-in Scroll filter. You will learn how to set up your text source, apply the scroll filter, adjust the vertical speed, and fine-tune the settings for a smooth, cinematic credit roll at the end of your stream or recording.
Step 1: Create a Text Source
To start, you need to add the text that will serve as your credits.
- Open OBS Studio and navigate to the Sources dock at the bottom of the screen.
- Click the + (Add) icon and select Text (GDI+) on Windows, or Text (FreeType 2) on Mac/Linux.
- Name the source “Credits” and click OK.
- In the properties window, type or paste your credits into the Text box. Use the Enter key to create line breaks, and add empty lines at the top and bottom of your text to ensure a clean entry and exit from the screen.
- Set your preferred font, color, and size. For a classic look, set the Alignment to Center. Click OK to save.
Step 2: Apply the Scroll Filter
Once your text source is ready, you can apply the filter that creates the movement.
- Right-click your newly created “Credits” text source in the Sources list.
- Select Filters from the context menu.
- In the Filters window, click the + (Add) icon in the bottom-left corner under the Effect Filters section.
- Select Scroll from the list, name the filter, and click OK.
Step 3: Configure the Scroll Speed
The Scroll filter allows you to control the direction and speed of the text movement.
- Locate the Vertical Speed slider.
- Drag the slider to the right (positive value) to make the text scroll upward, which is the standard direction for rolling credits. A speed value between 30 and 80 is generally ideal for readability, depending on your font size.
- Ensure the Horizontal Speed slider is set to 0 so the text does not drift sideways.
Step 4: Fine-Tune the Behavior
To customize how the credits behave on screen, adjust the following optional settings in the Scroll filter window:
- Looping: By default, the Loop checkbox is enabled, meaning the credits will continuously repeat. If you want the credits to roll through only once, uncheck Loop. To replay the credits when looping is disabled, simply toggle the visibility icon (the eye icon next to the source) off and back on.
- Limit Width/Height: If you want the credits to only appear within a specific bounding box on your screen rather than scrolling from the very bottom to the very top edge of the canvas, check Limit Height and enter your desired pixel dimensions.
Once you are satisfied with the speed and behavior, click Close. You can now drag and resize the text box on your preview canvas to position the credits exactly where you want them.
