How to Batch Remux Recordings in OBS Studio

OBS Studio saves recordings in formats like MKV to prevent file corruption during sudden crashes, but editing software often requires MP4 or MOV files. This guide provides a straightforward, step-by-step walkthrough on how to use OBS Studio’s built-in “Remux Recordings” interface to convert multiple video files simultaneously, quickly, and without any loss in video quality.

Why Remuxing is Better Than Converting

Unlike traditional video conversion, remuxing does not re-encode the video. It simply changes the container (for example, from MKV to MP4) while keeping the original video and audio data intact. This process is virtually instantaneous and results in zero quality loss.

Step-by-Step: Batch Remuxing in OBS Studio

Follow these steps to batch-convert your recordings:

  1. Open the Remux Interface: Launch OBS Studio, click on File in the top-left menu bar, and select Remux Recordings.
  2. Add Your Files: You can add multiple files to the list in two ways:
    • Drag and Drop: Select multiple video files from your file explorer and drag them directly into the “Remux Recordings” window.
    • Manual Selection: Click the three dots (…) under the “OBS Recording” column to browse and select your files. Hold Ctrl or Shift to select multiple files at once.
  3. Verify Output Settings: OBS automatically detects the source file and sets the target “Remuxed File” path to the same folder with an .mp4 extension. If you wish to change the destination or file name for a specific video, click the three dots (…) in the “Remuxed File” column for that row.
  4. Start the Process: Once all files are loaded, click the Remux button at the bottom right of the window.
  5. Completion: A progress bar will appear, and within seconds, a pop-up notification will confirm that the recording has been successfully remuxed. Click OK to finish.

How to Enable Automatic Remuxing

If you want to avoid manually batch-remuxing files in the future, you can configure OBS Studio to automatically convert your files to MP4 immediately after you stop recording:

  1. In OBS Studio, click on Settings in the bottom right corner (or go to File > Settings).
  2. Click on the Advanced tab in the left-hand menu.
  3. Scroll down to the Recording section.
  4. Check the box next to Automatically remux to mp4.
  5. Click Apply and then OK.
