How to Batch Remux MKV to MP4 in OBS Studio

This article provides a step-by-step guide on how to use the built-in “Remux Recordings” feature in OBS Studio to batch-convert multiple MKV video files into MP4 format simultaneously. By utilizing this method, you can quickly change your video file containers in bulk without losing any video quality or undergoing a time-consuming re-encoding process.

Why Use OBS Studio to Remux MKV Files?

Recording in MKV is highly recommended because it protects your footage from corruption if OBS Studio or your computer crashes mid-record. However, many video editing platforms do not natively support MKV. Remuxing solves this by changing the container format from MKV to MP4 without re-encoding the underlying video and audio data. This process is nearly instantaneous and preserves 100% of the original video quality.

Step-by-Step Guide to Batch Remuxing

Step 1: Open the Remux Interface

Launch OBS Studio on your computer. In the top-left menu bar, click on File and select Remux Recordings from the dropdown menu. This will open the dedicated Remux interface.

Step 2: Import Your MKV Files in Bulk

You can quickly load dozens of MKV files into the interface using one of two methods: * Drag and Drop: Open the folder containing your MKV files in your operating system’s file explorer. Select all the files you wish to convert, then drag and drop them directly into the list area of the OBS Remux window. * File Browser: Click the three dots icon () under the “OBS Recording” column. In the file explorer window, hold down Ctrl (Windows) or Cmd (Mac) to select multiple specific files, or press Ctrl + A / Cmd + A to select all files in the folder, then click Open.

Step 3: Verify Output Destinations

Once imported, OBS Studio will automatically populate the “Target File” column. By default, it will save the new MP4 files in the same folder as your original MKV files, maintaining the same filenames but changing the extension to .mp4.

Step 4: Execute the Batch Remux

After verifying that all your files are listed in the queue, click the Remux button at the bottom right of the window.

OBS Studio will process all the files in rapid succession. Because the system is only copying the data streams into a new container rather than re-rendering the video, converting dozens of large files will typically finish in just a few seconds. Once complete, a pop-up window will appear stating “Recording remuxed.” Click OK to finish, and your MP4 files will be ready for use.
