How to Automatically Remux MKV to MP4 in OBS Studio

Recording videos in the MKV format is highly recommended in OBS Studio because it prevents file corruption if the software crashes or your computer loses power. However, many video editing programs do not support MKV, requiring you to convert them to MP4. This guide provides a quick, step-by-step tutorial on how to configure OBS Studio to automatically remux (convert) your MKV recordings into MP4 files the moment you stop recording.

Step-by-Step Guide to Enable Auto-Remux

To set up automatic remuxing in OBS Studio, follow these simple steps:

  1. Open Settings: Launch OBS Studio, go to the bottom-right corner of the screen in the “Controls” dock, and click on Settings (or go to File > Settings in the top menu).
  2. Navigate to Advanced: In the left-hand sidebar of the Settings window, click on the Advanced tab.
  3. Enable Auto-Remux: Scroll down to the Recording section. Look for the option labeled Automatically remux to mp4 and check the box next to it.
  4. Save Your Changes: Click Apply in the bottom-right corner, and then click OK to close the window.

How It Works

Once this feature is enabled, you can continue recording your gameplay or presentation in the safer MKV format. The moment you click Stop Recording, OBS Studio will instantly create a duplicate version of the file in MP4 format in your designated output folder.

Because remuxing simply copies the existing video and audio streams into a new container without re-encoding, the process is nearly instantaneous and results in zero loss of video quality. You will be left with both the original MKV file (as a backup) and the new MP4 file ready for editing or uploading.
