How to Auto Mute Microphone on OBS BRB Scene

When streaming on OBS Studio, stepping away from your desk can lead to awkward moments if your microphone remains active on your “Be Right Back” (BRB) scene. This guide provides a straightforward, step-by-step tutorial on how to automatically mute your microphone when switching to a BRB scene by transitioning from global audio devices to scene-specific audio sources.

Step 1: Disable Global Microphone Audio

By default, OBS Studio keeps your microphone active across all scenes. To stop this, you must disable the global microphone setting. 1. Open OBS Studio. 2. Click on Settings (located in the bottom-right Controls dock or under the File menu). 3. Select the Audio tab on the left. 4. Under the Global Audio Devices section, find Mic/Auxiliary Audio and change it to Disabled. 5. Click Apply and then OK.

Step 2: Add Your Microphone to Active Scenes

Now that the global microphone is disabled, you must manually add your microphone only to the scenes where you want your voice to be heard. 1. Select your primary scene (such as your “Gameplay” or “Just Chatting” scene). 2. In the Sources dock, click the + (plus) icon. 3. Select Audio Input Capture. 4. Choose Create New, name it “My Microphone,” and click OK. 5. Select your microphone device from the drop-down menu and click OK.

Step 3: Configure Your BRB Scene

To ensure your microphone is muted during your break, simply do not add the microphone source to your BRB scene. 1. Select your Be Right Back scene in the Scenes dock. 2. Check the Sources and Audio Mixer docks. 3. Ensure the “My Microphone” source is not listed. If it is present, right-click it in the Sources dock and select Remove.

With these settings applied, transitioning from your main scene to your BRB scene will automatically stop capturing your microphone audio. When you switch back to your main scene, your microphone will instantly reactivate.
