How to Add a Webcam Source to OBS Studio

Adding a webcam to OBS Studio is a fundamental step for streamers, content creators, and remote presenters looking to personalize their broadcasts. This guide provides a straightforward, step-by-step walkthrough on how to connect your camera, insert it as a Video Capture Device source, and position it within your stream layout for a professional presentation.

Step 1: Create or Select a Scene

Before adding your webcam, ensure you have a scene ready in the Scenes dock, which is usually located in the bottom-left corner of the OBS Studio interface. Click the + icon to create a new scene, or simply select an existing scene where you want your webcam to appear.

Step 2: Add a Video Capture Device Source

  1. Locate the Sources dock next to the Scenes dock at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Click the + (Add) icon at the bottom of the Sources dock.
  3. Select Video Capture Device from the pop-up menu.
  4. In the window that appears, select Create new, name the source (e.g., “Webcam”), and click OK.

Step 3: Configure Your Webcam Settings

A properties window will automatically open, showing a live preview of your camera feed. Customize the following settings: * Device: Click the dropdown menu and select your connected webcam. * Resolution/FPS Type: Leave this as “Device Default” for an instant setup, or change it to “Custom” to manually set your desired resolution (like 1920x1080) and frame rate (such as 30 or 60 FPS). * Video Format / Color Space: For most users, leaving these at their default settings provides the best compatibility. Once you are satisfied with the preview, click OK to apply the changes.

Step 4: Position and Resize the Webcam in Your Layout

Your webcam feed will now appear on the main OBS preview canvas, surrounded by a red bounding box. * To Move: Click and drag the camera feed to place it anywhere within your layout. * To Resize: Click and drag any of the red square handles on the corners of the bounding box to scale the camera feed up or down. * To Crop: Hold down the Alt key (or Option key on Mac) while clicking and dragging the sides of the bounding box to crop out unwanted areas of your camera frame.
