How to Add a Loop Transparent GIF in OBS Studio
Adding animated graphics to your stream can significantly improve its production value. This article provides a step-by-step guide on how to use the “Image” source in OBS Studio to display a transparent GIF that loops infinitely, ensuring your overlays and alerts run smoothly without any background blocks.
Step-by-Step Guide
Follow these steps to add and configure your transparent looping GIF in OBS Studio:
Add the Image Source
Open OBS Studio and locate the Sources dock at the bottom of the screen. Click the + (plus) icon and select Image from the dropdown menu.Name the Source
In the pop-up window, select Create new, type a descriptive name for your source (such as “Transparent Alert GIF”), and click OK.Locate Your GIF File
In the properties window that appears, click the Browse button. Navigate to the folder on your computer where your GIF is saved, select the file, and click Open.Verify Properties
The OBS “Image” source automatically supports transparency and loops animated GIFs infinitely by default. Make sure the preview looks correct. It is recommended to check the box for Unload image when not showing to save system resources when the GIF is hidden, then click OK.Position and Resize the GIF
Click on the GIF in the OBS preview window. Use the red boundary box handles to resize the animation, and drag it to your preferred position on the screen.
Troubleshooting
- The background is not transparent: Ensure your file was exported with a transparent alpha channel. If it has a solid black or white background, you must use a graphic editing tool to make it transparent, or apply a Color Key filter in OBS to key out the background color.
- The GIF plays once and stops: Ensure you used the Image source and not the Media Source. The Image source is designed to loop GIFs automatically, whereas the Media Source requires you to manually check a “Loop” box in its properties.
