How to Add 3D Transform Effects in OBS Studio
This guide provides a straightforward, step-by-step walkthrough on how to apply 3D transform effects to your sources in OBS Studio. By using a popular, free plugin, you will learn how to tilt, rotate, and add realistic depth and perspective to your webcams, gameplay capture, overlays, and other scene sources.
To achieve true 3D rotation and perspective warping in OBS Studio, you need to use a dedicated plugin, as OBS does not have these advanced 3D controls built-in. The most reliable and widely used tool for this is the 3D Effect plugin by developer Exeldro.
Step 1: Install the 3D Effect Plugin
- Close OBS Studio if it is currently running.
- Search for the OBS 3D Effect plugin on the official OBS Studio Resources website.
- Download the installer compatible with your operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux).
- Run the installer and follow the prompts to complete the setup.
- Reopen OBS Studio.
Step 2: Apply the 3D Effect Filter
- Go to the Sources dock in OBS and locate the source you want to transform (e.g., your camera or gameplay capture).
- Right-click on the source and select Filters.
- In the Filters window, click the + (plus) icon in the bottom-left corner under the Effect Filters section.
- Select 3D Effect from the list, give it a name, and click OK.
Step 3: Configure the 3D Controls
Once the filter is applied, you will see several sliders in the properties window. Adjust these settings to achieve your desired 3D look:
- Rotation (X, Y, Z):
- X-Rotation: Tilts the source forward or backward.
- Y-Rotation: Rotates the source left or right (ideal for a “slanted” or angled sidebar look).
- Z-Rotation: Spins the source clockwise or counter-clockwise on a flat plane.
- Perspective: Adjusts the intensity of the 3D depth. Higher values make the parts of the source closer to the camera appear much larger than the parts further away.
- Position (X, Y, Z): Shifts the source along the horizontal, vertical, and depth axes.
- Scale: Adjusts the overall size of the source within the 3D space.
- Camera Distance: Changes how far the virtual viewing camera is from the source, which alters how dramatic the perspective distortion is.
Step 4: Fine-tune and Save
- Drag the sliders slowly to preview the changes in real-time.
- If you want to start over, click the Reset button next to any slider to return to the default flat state.
- Once you are satisfied with the 3D angle, click Close on the Filters window.
You can now reposition and resize the entire transformed source on your canvas just like any standard OBS source.
