Fix Washed Out Webcam Colors in OBS
If your webcam feed looks faded, gray, or washed out in OBS Studio, the issue is likely caused by a mismatch in video range and color space settings. This article provides a direct, step-by-step guide to adjusting your webcam’s properties in OBS Studio, allowing you to correct the color range, restore deep blacks, and achieve vibrant, accurate colors.
Step 1: Open Webcam Properties in OBS Studio
- Launch OBS Studio.
- Go to the Sources dock at the bottom of the screen.
- Locate your webcam source (usually named “Video Capture Device”).
- Double-click the webcam source, or right-click it and select Properties.
Step 2: Enable Custom Video Settings
By default, OBS uses the webcam’s default driver settings, which often restrict color configuration. 1. In the Properties window, scroll down to the Resolution/FPS Type dropdown menu. 2. Change this setting from “Device Default” to Custom. 3. Select your preferred Resolution and FPS from the newly revealed dropdown menus to match your webcam’s capabilities (e.g., 1920x1080 at 30 fps).
Step 3: Modify Color Space and Video Range
Adjusting these settings directly impacts how OBS interprets the dark and light values of your camera feed. 1. Locate the Color Space dropdown. Change it from “Default” to Rec. 709 (this provides a wider, more modern color gamut than the older Rec. 601). 2. Locate the Color Range (or Video Range) dropdown. 3. Change this setting from “Default” to Full.
Note: Changing the Color Range to “Full” expands the luminance levels from 0-255, which immediately restores deep blacks and removes the gray, washed-out overlay. If your video suddenly looks too dark or high-contrast (black crushing), switch this setting to Partial (16-235) to see which option matches your specific webcam sensor best.
Step 4: Save and Apply Changes
- Click OK at the bottom of the Properties window to save your settings.
- If the webcam preview does not update immediately, deactivate and reactivate the source by clicking the eye icon next to the webcam source in the Sources list, or restart OBS Studio.
