Fix OBS Studio Crash: Game Capture to Browser Source
This article provides a straightforward troubleshooting guide to resolve the issue of OBS Studio crashing when transitioning from a game capture source to a browser source. You will learn the primary causes of this crash, which typically involve GPU resource conflicts and hardware acceleration, and the exact steps needed to configure your settings for a stable, crash-free stream.
Disable Browser Source Hardware Acceleration
The most common cause of crashes when switching to a browser source is a conflict in how your GPU handles hardware acceleration between the game and the OBS browser rendering engine.
- Open OBS Studio.
- Click on Settings in the bottom-right corner (or go to File > Settings).
- Select the Advanced tab from the left menu.
- Scroll down to the Sources section.
- Uncheck the box that says Enable browser source hardware acceleration.
- Click Apply, then OK, and restart OBS Studio.
Enable “Deactivate When Not Showing”
When transitioning between scenes, OBS may crash if both the game capture and the browser source try to access GPU resources simultaneously. Forcing OBS to release these resources when a source is inactive prevents this conflict.
- Double-click your Game Capture source to open its properties.
- Scroll to the bottom and check the box for Deactivate when not showing. Click OK.
- Double-click your Browser Source to open its properties.
- Scroll down and check the box for Deactivate when not showing (or Shutdown source when not visible). Click OK.
Run OBS Studio as Administrator
Running OBS without administrator privileges can prevent it from properly allocating the GPU resources required to transition between heavy game hooks and web rendering.
- Right-click the OBS Studio shortcut on your desktop or in your Start menu.
- Select Properties.
- Go to the Compatibility tab.
- Check the box for Run this program as an administrator.
- Click Apply and then OK.
Update Graphics Card Drivers
Outdated or corrupted GPU drivers frequently cause DirectX and OpenGL errors during source transitions.
- Download the latest drivers for your graphics card directly from the official website (NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel).
- During installation, select a Clean Install if the option is available to wipe old, corrupted driver files.
- Restart your computer after the installation is complete.
Disable Conflicting In-Game Overlays
Third-party overlays can interfere with the OBS game hook, causing a crash when the hook is released during a scene switch. Disable overlays in programs such as:
- Discord (Overlay settings)
- GeForce Experience / AMD Radeon Software
- Steam / Ubisoft Connect / EA App
- MSI Afterburner / RivaTuner Statistics Server
