Fix OBS Studio Chrome Black Screen Capture

Capturing Google Chrome in OBS Studio often results in a frustrating black screen instead of displaying your browser content. This issue is typically caused by hardware acceleration conflicts, incorrect OBS capture settings, or permission limitations. This article provides direct, step-by-step solutions to quickly resolve the black screen issue and get your Chrome capture working properly in OBS.

Method 1: Disable Hardware Acceleration in Google Chrome

The most common cause of the black screen is Chrome’s hardware acceleration feature, which prevents OBS from recording the browser window.

  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. Click the three dots (menu icon) in the top-right corner and select Settings.
  3. In the left sidebar, click on System (or search for “hardware acceleration” in the settings search bar).
  4. Turn off the toggle switch next to Use graphics acceleration when available (or Use hardware acceleration when available).
  5. Click the Relaunch button that appears to apply the changes.
  6. Open OBS Studio and check if the Chrome window is now visible.

Method 2: Change the OBS Capture Method

If disabling hardware acceleration does not work, adjusting how OBS captures the window can bypass the black screen.

  1. Open OBS Studio.
  2. Double-click your Window Capture source under the “Sources” box to open its properties.
  3. Locate the Capture Method dropdown menu.
  4. Change the selection from Automatic to Windows 10 (1903 and up).
  5. If that does not work, try selecting BitBlt (Windows 7 and up).
  6. Click OK to save the settings.

Method 3: Run OBS Studio as Administrator

Sometimes OBS lacks the necessary system permissions to capture certain applications, resulting in a blank or black display.

  1. Close OBS Studio completely.
  2. Right-click the OBS Studio shortcut icon on your desktop or in your Start menu.
  3. Select Run as administrator.
  4. Click Yes if a User Account Control prompt appears.
  5. Attempt to capture Google Chrome again.
