Fix OBS Hotkey Conflicts with Editing Software
Running OBS Studio alongside video editing software often leads to frustrating hotkey conflicts, where pressing a key triggers actions in both programs simultaneously. This guide provides direct, actionable solutions to resolve these conflicts, including configuring OBS hotkey focus behavior, using modifier keys, and adjusting administrator privileges so you can stream and edit seamlessly.
Change OBS Hotkey Focus Behavior
OBS Studio includes a built-in setting that determines how it handles hotkeys when the application is not the active window. Adjusting this is the quickest way to stop OBS from hijacking your editing software’s shortcuts.
- Open OBS Studio.
- Go to Settings (bottom right or under File > Settings).
- Click on the Advanced tab in the left sidebar.
- Scroll down to the Hotkeys section.
- Locate the Hotkey Focus Behavior dropdown menu.
- Change the setting to Disable hotkeys when main window is not in focus.
This prevents OBS from registering any keystrokes while you are actively working inside your video editing software.
Use Complex Modifier Key Combinations
If you still need certain OBS hotkeys to work globally (e.g., to
start/stop recording while editing), avoid using single-key shortcuts
like F5 or Spacebar.
Instead, bind your OBS hotkeys to complex combinations that your
editing software does not use. Combine standard keys with modifiers such
as: * Ctrl + Shift + Alt + [Key] * Ctrl + F12
* Numpad keys (e.g., Num * or Num -), which
are rarely used for default editing commands.
Adjust Administrator Privileges
If OBS Studio is running with Administrator privileges, Windows prioritizes its inputs over non-administrator applications. This can cause OBS to hijack hotkeys even when it is minimized.
- If you need global hotkeys: Keep OBS running as Administrator, but make sure your editing software is also running as Administrator so they share the same input priority.
- If you do not need global hotkeys: Close OBS, right-click the OBS shortcut, select Properties, go to the Compatibility tab, and uncheck Run this program as an administrator.
Map Controls to a Secondary Device
To completely isolate your editing workflow from your streaming workflow, offload your OBS controls to external hardware. Using a dedicated macro pad, a stream deck, or a secondary USB keyboard mapped with software like Luamacros allows you to trigger OBS actions without pressing any keys on your primary keyboard.
