Dynamic OBS Just Chatting Layout Using Nested Scenes
This guide explains how to build a dynamic “Just Chatting” scene layout in OBS Studio using the power of nested scenes. By treating individual scenes as sources within other scenes, you can create a highly flexible, professional stream layout. This method allows you to easily resize, reposition, and apply filters to your webcam, chat, and gameplay captures globally without cluttering your main scenes or repeating tedious setup steps.
Step 1: Create Your Source Scenes
Before building the final layout, you must create the individual “building block” scenes. By separating these elements, any changes you make to them will automatically update across all scenes where they are used.
- Create the Webcam Scene:
- Click the + icon under the Scenes
dock and name it
[Source] Webcam. - Under the Sources dock, add your camera (Video Capture Device).
- Adjust your camera’s color correction, filters, or crop settings here.
- Click the + icon under the Scenes
dock and name it
- Create the Chat Scene:
- Create a new scene named
[Source] Chat. - Add your chat widget (typically a Browser Source from services like Streamelements or Streamlabs).
- Size the browser source to fit the canvas.
- Create a new scene named
- Create the Gameplay/Background Scene (Optional):
- Create a scene named
[Source] Gameplayor[Source] Desktop. - Add your Game Capture, Window Capture, or Video Capture Device for your console.
- Create a scene named
Step 2: Assemble the “Just Chatting” Scene
Now that your individual source scenes are ready, you will nest them inside your main “Just Chatting” presentation scene.
- Create a new scene and name it
Just Chatting. - Add a background to this scene first (an image, a looping video, or a color source) so it sits at the bottom of your sources list.
- Click the + icon in the Sources
dock, select Scene, and choose
[Source] Webcam. - Click the + icon again, select
Scene, and choose
[Source] Chat. - If you want to show game footage or a desktop capture in a small
window, add the
[Source] Gameplayscene as a source.
Step 3: Arrange and Format Your Layout
With your nested scenes added as sources, you can now freely manipulate them on your canvas without affecting the original assets.
- Resize and Position: Click on the
[Source] Webcamscene in your preview window. Resize it and place it where you want. Do the same for your[Source] Chatand[Source] Gameplayscenes. - Apply Borders and Masks: If you want to apply a
border or a rounded-corner mask to your webcam, you can apply the effect
directly to the
[Source] Webcamlayer inside yourJust Chattingscene. - Add Overlay Graphics: Add any static overlays, stream labels (like latest follower), or alert packages on top of these nested scenes.
Why This Method is Superior
Using nested scenes for your “Just Chatting” layout offers several distinct workflow advantages:
- Single-Point Editing: If you get a new webcam or
need to adjust your camera’s color grading, you only have to update the
[Source] Webcamscene. The changes will instantly reflect in your “Just Chatting”, “Main Gameplay”, and “Be Right Back” scenes. - Performance Optimization: OBS handles nested scenes efficiently. It prevents the system from loading duplicate instances of the same hardware device or browser source, reducing CPU and GPU overhead.
- Flawless Transitions: When transitioning between different scenes that use the same nested source, OBS will smoothly animate the source’s movement and scale using the “Move” transition plugin or standard studio transitions, preventing jarring flickers.
