Create 4:3 OBS Webcam Borders Using Color Sources

Adding a professional border to your webcam can instantly elevate your stream’s production value. This guide provides a step-by-step walkthrough on how to use OBS Studio’s built-in “Color Source” feature to create custom, stylized borders specifically tailored for a retro or standard 4:3 webcam aspect ratio, without needing external graphic design software.

Step 1: Determine Your Webcam Resolution

To create a perfectly proportioned border, you need to know the resolution of your 4:3 webcam feed. Common 4:3 resolutions include: * Standard HD: 1440 x 1080 * Medium Quality: 960 x 720 * Standard Definition: 640 x 480

Identify which resolution your camera is outputting in your video capture device settings before proceeding.

Step 2: Calculate the Border Dimensions

Your Color Source needs to be slightly larger than your webcam feed to peak out from behind it. To calculate the correct size, add twice your desired border thickness to both the width and height of your webcam resolution.

For a 10-pixel thick border on a 1440 x 1080 webcam: * Width: 1440 + (10 x 2) = 1460 pixels * Height: 1080 + (10 x 2) = 1100 pixels

For a 15-pixel thick border on a 960 x 720 webcam: * Width: 960 + (15 x 2) = 990 pixels * Height: 720 + (15 x 2) = 750 pixels

Step 3: Create and Configure the Color Source

  1. Open OBS Studio.
  2. In the Sources dock, click the + (plus) icon and select Color Source.
  3. Name the source (e.g., “Webcam Border”) and click OK.
  4. In the properties window, click Select Color to choose your border color. You can use solid colors or match your brand’s hex code.
  5. In the Width and Height fields, enter the calculated dimensions from Step 2.
  6. Click OK to save the source.

Step 4: Layer and Align the Sources

  1. In the Sources dock, drag your new “Webcam Border” source so that it sits directly below your webcam feed source in the list.
  2. Select both your webcam source and the border source by holding Ctrl (or Cmd on Mac) and clicking both.
  3. Right-click on the selection, navigate to Transform, and select Align Center.
  4. With both sources still highlighted, right-click again and select Group Selected Items. Name the group “Webcam Pack.” Grouping these sources allows you to resize and move the webcam and its custom border around your canvas as a single unit without ruining the alignment.

Step 5: Add a Stylized Dual-Tone Border (Optional)

If you want a more complex aesthetic, such as a neon glow or double-layered border: 1. Create a second Color Source of a different color. 2. Make its dimensions slightly larger than the first border (e.g., 1480 x 1120). 3. Place this second Color Source at the very bottom of the source stack. 4. Align all three sources to the center and group them.
