Configure OBS Studio Replay Buffer to RAM

This article provides a straightforward, step-by-step guide on how to configure the Replay Buffer in OBS Studio to temporarily save your gaming or streaming clips directly to your system memory (RAM). By allocating RAM for your buffer instead of writing constantly to your solid-state drive (SSD) or hard drive, you can reduce drive wear and tear while capturing your best moments seamlessly.

How the OBS Replay Buffer Uses RAM

By design, OBS Studio utilizes your system memory (RAM) to temporarily hold the recorded footage for your replay buffer. It only writes the data to your hard drive or SSD once you press your designated hotkey to save the clip.

To set this up, you must enable the Replay Buffer and specify exactly how much RAM OBS is allowed to dedicate to this feature.

Step 1: Enable the Replay Buffer

  1. Open OBS Studio.
  2. Click on Settings in the bottom-right Controls dock (or go to File > Settings).
  3. Select the Output tab from the left sidebar.
  4. At the top of the Output menu, change the Output Mode dropdown from Simple to Advanced.
  5. Click on the Replay Buffer tab.
  6. Check the box next to Enable Replay Buffer.

Step 2: Allocate System Memory (RAM)

Once the Replay Buffer is enabled, you need to configure the time and memory limits:

  1. Maximum Replay Time: Enter the duration (in seconds) of the clip you want to capture (e.g., 30 for a 30-second clip, or 60 for a one-minute clip).
  2. Maximum Memory (MB): This is the maximum amount of RAM OBS will use to temporarily store the buffer.
    • As a rule of thumb, high-quality 1080p 60fps video requires about 150MB to 200MB per minute.
    • To prevent your clips from being cut short due to memory limits, allocate a safe overhead. For a 60-second clip, setting this to 512 MB or 1024 MB (1 GB) is highly recommended.
  3. Click Apply.

Step 3: Configure the Save Hotkey

To write the active RAM buffer to a permanent video file on your drive, you need to assign a hotkey:

  1. In the Settings window, click on the Hotkeys tab in the left sidebar.
  2. In the search bar at the top, type Replay.
  3. Locate the Save Replay action under the Replay Buffer section.
  4. Click the empty field next to it and press your preferred key combination (e.g., Ctrl + Shift + S).
  5. Click OK to save your settings and close the window.

Step 4: Run the Replay Buffer

To start using the buffer during your sessions:

  1. Look at the Controls dock in the bottom-right corner of OBS Studio.
  2. Click Start Replay Buffer (this button will appear next to “Start Recording” once enabled).
  3. Keep OBS running in the background. When something exciting happens, press your assigned hotkey to instantly save the cached RAM buffer to your default recording directory.
