Configure OBS Studio for 5.1 Audio Streaming
Streaming in multi-channel surround sound offers a highly immersive experience for gaming, live concerts, and theater broadcasts. This guide provides a straightforward, step-by-step walkthrough to configure OBS Studio for encoding and streaming Dolby Digital 5.1 audio to platforms that support multi-channel sound, such as YouTube.
Step 1: Enable 5.1 Audio in OBS Studio Settings
By default, OBS Studio is set to stereo output. You must manually change the audio channel configuration to support surround sound.
- Open OBS Studio.
- Click on Settings in the bottom-right corner (or go to File > Settings).
- Select the Audio tab from the left sidebar.
- Under the General section, locate the Channels dropdown menu.
- Change the setting from Stereo to 5.1.
- Click Apply and then OK.
- Restart OBS Studio for this change to take effect.
Step 2: Configure Your Audio Devices
To stream 5.1 audio, your physical hardware and Windows/OS settings must also be configured to output surround sound.
- Ensure your sound card or audio interface is set to 5.1 surround sound in your operating system’s sound control panel.
- In OBS Studio, go back to Settings > Audio.
- Under Global Audio Devices, select your surround-sound-enabled device (e.g., your desktop audio or specific audio interface) as Desktop Audio.
- Click Apply and OK.
Step 3: Adjust Audio Bitrate for Multi-Channel Sound
5.1 surround sound requires more bandwidth than standard stereo. You must increase the audio bitrate to prevent compression artifacts.
- Open Settings and navigate to the Output tab.
- Set the Output Mode at the top to Advanced.
- Click on the Audio tab (next to Streaming and Recording).
- For the audio track you are using to stream (usually Track 1), increase the Audio Bitrate to at least 320 Kbps (512 Kbps is highly recommended for optimal 5.1 audio quality).
- Click Apply and OK.
Step 4: Verify the Audio Mixer Channels
Once 5.1 audio is enabled, you must verify that OBS is receiving all six channels (Left, Right, Center, Low-Frequency Effects/Subwoofer, Left Surround, Right Surround).
- Look at the Audio Mixer docking panel in the main OBS window.
- Play a surround sound audio source or game.
- You should see multiple green level meters bouncing for your input device instead of just the standard two (Left/Right) meters, indicating that OBS is receiving the multi-channel feed.
Step 5: Configure Your Streaming Platform (YouTube)
Not all platforms support 5.1 audio streaming. YouTube is currently the primary platform that supports live 5.1 audio ingestion via RTMP or HLS.
- Go to the YouTube Creator Studio and create a live stream.
- In OBS Studio, go to Settings > Stream.
- Select YouTube - HLS (recommended for high-quality audio and video) or YouTube - RTMP as your service.
- Paste your Stream Key and click OK.
- Start your stream. YouTube will automatically detect the 5.1 AAC audio feed and distribute it to viewers using compatible surround sound hardware (such as eARC-connected soundbars, AV receivers, or compatible headphones).
