Configure OBS Limiter Release Time for Natural Audio

In OBS Studio, the Limiter filter is crucial for preventing audio clipping and distortion, but an improper configuration can result in abrupt, unnatural audio cuts. This guide explains how to access the Limiter filter in the OBS Studio mixer and configure the “Release” time setting to ensure a smooth, natural audio decay that preserves the quality of your stream or recording.

Accessing the Limiter Filter in OBS Studio

Before adjusting the release time, you must apply the Limiter filter to your desired audio source:

  1. Locate the Audio Mixer dock in the main OBS Studio window.
  2. Click the three vertical dots (Options) next to the audio source you want to configure (e.g., Mic/Aux or Desktop Audio).
  3. Select Filters from the drop-down menu.
  4. Click the “+” icon in the bottom-left corner of the Filters window.
  5. Select Limiter from the list, name the filter, and click OK.

Understanding the Release Time

The Release setting, measured in milliseconds (ms), determines how quickly the limiter stops compressing the audio once the signal falls below the set threshold.

Configuring the Release for Natural Decay

To achieve a natural fade-out when your audio levels drop, follow these steps to fine-tune the Release slider:

  1. Set the Threshold: First, set your Threshold to prevent clipping. A safe standard for streaming and recording is between -2.0 dB and -6.0 dB.
  2. Set the Initial Release Time: Move the Release slider to a baseline of 150 ms to 300 ms. This range is widely considered the sweet spot for human speech, allowing the natural tail-ends of words to decay smoothly.
  3. Test the Audio: Speak loudly into your microphone to trigger the limiter (indicated by the red reduction bar in the filter preview), then stop speaking abruptly.
  4. Fine-Tune the Setting:
    • If you hear a rapid, unnatural jump in background noise right after you stop speaking, increase the release time by 50 ms increments.
    • If your voice sounds muffled or too quiet when you start speaking again immediately after a loud sound, decrease the release time by 50 ms increments.

By setting the release time within the 150 ms to 300 ms range, you allow the OBS Studio limiter to transparently protect your stream from clipping while maintaining a professional, seamless audio transition.
