Capture High-Res Scrolling Screenshots with OBS Studio

This article provides a step-by-step guide on how to use OBS Studio to capture high-resolution, full-page scrolling screenshots of web pages. By leveraging OBS Studio’s built-in browser source, you can render web pages at extreme vertical resolutions and save them as single, high-quality images without the need for third-party browser extensions.

Step 1: Add a Browser Source

  1. Open OBS Studio.
  2. In the Sources dock at the bottom of the screen, click the + (plus) icon and select Browser.
  3. Name the source (e.g., “Webpage Capture”) and click OK.

Step 2: Set the Webpage URL and Custom Dimensions

To capture a scrolling page, you must set the source’s height to match the full length of the webpage. 1. In the properties window for the Browser source, paste the URL of the website you want to capture into the URL field. 2. Set the Width to your desired horizontal resolution (typically 1920 for standard desktop width). 3. Set the Height to a large value that will fit the entire length of the page (e.g., 4000 to 8000 pixels). You can adjust this number later if the page is longer or shorter. 4. Click OK.

Step 3: Interact with the Page (Optional)

If you need to accept cookies, close pop-ups, or log into an account before taking the screenshot: 1. Right-click the Browser source in the Sources list. 2. Click Interact. 3. A window will appear allowing you to click, scroll, and type on the webpage just like a standard browser. Close the window when finished.

Step 4: Adjust the Canvas Size

To ensure the entire high-resolution image is captured without being cropped by your standard video canvas: 1. Go to Settings in the bottom-right corner of OBS, then select the Video tab. 2. Manually type your custom browser source dimensions (e.g., 1920x8000) into both the Base (Canvas) Resolution and Output (Scaled) Resolution fields. 3. Click Apply and then OK.

Step 5: Save the Screenshot

  1. Right-click on the browser source in the main OBS preview window or in the Sources list.
  2. Select Screenshot (Source).
  3. The high-resolution scrolling screenshot will be saved automatically to your default OBS recording directory, which can be found by going to File > Show Recordings in the top menu.
