Apply 3D LUT to Mirrorless Camera in OBS Studio
Using a 3D LUT (Look-Up Table) in OBS Studio is the fastest way to
transform a flat, washed-out camera feed into a rich, cinematic visual.
This article will guide you through the process of setting up your
mirrorless camera, importing a .cube LUT file into OBS
Studio, applying it as a video filter, and fine-tuning the look to
achieve professional-grade color grading for your live streams or video
recordings.
Step 1: Set Up Your Mirrorless Camera
To get the most out of a 3D LUT, your camera source should ideally output a flat color profile (such as Sony’s S-Log, Canon’s C-Log, or Fujifilm’s F-Log) via your capture card. If your camera does not support log profiles, select a “Neutral” or “Portrait” profile and lower the contrast and saturation in your camera’s internal settings. This preserves dynamic range and gives the LUT more data to work with.
Step 2: Add Your Camera Source to OBS Studio
- Open OBS Studio.
- In the Sources dock, click the + (plus) icon and select Video Capture Device.
- Name your device (e.g., “Mirrorless Camera”) and click OK.
- Select your capture card from the Device drop-down menu, configure your resolution and frame rate, and click OK.
Step 3: Apply the LUT Filter
- Right-click on your mirrorless camera source in the Sources list (or in the preview window) and select Filters.
- In the Filters window, locate the Effect Filters section at the bottom.
- Click the + (plus) icon under Effect Filters and select Apply LUT.
- Name the filter (e.g., “Cinematic LUT”) and click OK.
Step 4: Load Your 3D LUT File
- In the Apply LUT filter settings, click the Browse button next to the “Path” field.
- Navigate to the folder on your computer where your
.cubeLUT files are saved. - Select the LUT that matches your camera’s profile (or a creative LUT designed for Rec. 709 space) and click Open.
Step 5: Adjust the LUT Intensity
Once loaded, the LUT will immediately alter the colors of your camera feed. Because creative LUTs can sometimes appear too intense, use the Amount slider to control the strength of the effect. * A value of 1.00 applies the LUT at 100% strength. * Drag the slider to the left (typically between 0.50 and 0.80) to blend the LUT with your original camera feed for a more natural, subtle cinematic look.
Click Close when you are satisfied with the colors. Your mirrorless camera feed is now color-graded in real-time.
