The Mechanics of Phase Cancellation
When a stereo mix collapses into mono, the left and right audio channels combine into a single summed signal. If identical or similar sound waves in the left and right channels are out of phase—meaning the peak of one wave aligns with the trough of another—they cancel each other out.
This acoustic phenomenon, known as destructive phase cancellation or comb filtering, hollows out the frequency response. - High-Pass Stereo Information on Bass: Apply mid/side equalization to filter out stereo side information below 100 Hz to 120 Hz, ensuring the sub-bass remains completely monophonic.
- Test Width Effects in Isolation: When applying stereo choruses, delays, or widening plugins, toggle the mono button to verify that the dry signal remains present and tone color does not thin out.
