How to Burn MKV Files to a Playable DVD
Burning an MKV video file to a DVD that plays on standard home DVD players requires converting the container format and authoring the disc structure. Because MKV is a modern HD container, simply copying the file to a blank disc will only create a “data DVD” that most standalone players cannot read. This guide provides a straightforward, step-by-step walkthrough on how to convert and burn MKV files into the standard DVD-Video format using free, open-source software.
Why You Can’t Just Copy the MKV File
Standard DVD players do not support the MKV format. They require a
specific folder structure containing VIDEO_TS and
AUDIO_TS directories, with the video encoded in the MPEG-2
format. To bridge this gap, you must use DVD authoring software that
automatically transcodes the MKV file and burns it in the correct
format.
Step-by-Step Guide Using DVDStyler
DVDStyler is a free, cross-platform DVD authoring tool that handles both the conversion of MKV files and the burning process.
Step 1: Download and Install DVDStyler
Download the software from the official DVDStyler website. Install it on your computer, making sure to decline any optional third-party bundled software if prompted.
Step 2: Configure a New Project
- Open DVDStyler.
- In the “Welcome” dialog box, select Create a new project.
- Set your disc capacity (choose DVD-5 for standard 4.7 GB discs or DVD-9 for dual-layer 8.5 GB discs).
- Select the video format based on your region: NTSC for North America and Japan, or PAL for Europe and most other countries.
- Set the aspect ratio (usually 16:9 for modern widescreen MKV files).
- Click OK.
Step 3: Add Your MKV File
- Locate the MKV file on your computer.
- Drag and drop the MKV file into the Titleset Manager area at the bottom of the DVDStyler window.
- If the file has multiple audio tracks or subtitles, double-click the added video thumbnail to select your preferred language tracks.
Step 4: Create or Disable the Menu
- To use a menu: Select one of the pre-designed templates on the left sidebar, then drag and drop text or buttons onto the workspace.
- To skip the menu: If you want the video to play immediately when inserted, double-click “Menu 1” at the bottom, check the box to disable it, or set the first-play action to play the video directly.
Step 5: Burn the DVD
- Insert a blank DVD-R or DVD+R disc into your computer’s DVD writer.
- Click the red Burn icon (the disc icon with a flame) in the top toolbar.
- In the burn dialog box, select the burn option and choose your optical drive from the dropdown menu.
- Click Start.
The software will now transcode your MKV file into MPEG-2 format and burn it directly to the blank DVD. This conversion process can take anywhere from a few minutes to over an hour depending on your computer’s hardware speed and the length of the video. Once finished, the disc will eject and be ready to play in any standard home DVD player.
