The Musical Instrument Digital Interface, universally known as MIDI, revolutionized music production in the early 1980s by establishing a common language that allowed electronic musical instruments and computers to communicate with each other. Rather than emerging from a single laboratory, MIDI was the result of a rare and historic collaboration between competing American and Japanese synthesizer manufacturers. The Key Inventors
Two primary figures led the development and adoption of the MIDI standard:
- Ikutaro Kakehashi (Roland Corporation): Kakehashi, the founder of Roland, was the driving philosophical force behind the project. In the early 1980s, electronic musical instruments used proprietary control voltages, meaning instruments made by different companies could not easily connect. Kakehashi envisioned a non-proprietary, universal communication protocol and actively approached American synthesizer manufacturers to turn this vision into an industry-wide reality. He also insisted that the protocol remain open and royalty-free to ensure universal adoption.
- Dave Smith (Sequential Circuits): Widely recognized as the "Father of MIDI," Smith was the president of Sequential Circuits and an engineer who embraced Kakehashi's proposal. At the October 1981 Audio Engineering Society (AES) convention, Smith presented a paper proposing the "Universal Synthesizer Interface" (USI).
- Chet Wood (Sequential Circuits): Working alongside Dave Smith, Wood co-authored the original 1981 AES paper and helped design the foundational hardware and data architecture for the proposed interface.
The Companies Involved
The creation of MIDI required cooperation across international borders, involving the leading synthesizer manufacturers of the era.
- Sequential Circuits: Representing the American synth industry, Dave Smith and his engineering team drafted the baseline specifications and adapted the protocol based on manufacturer feedback.
- Roland Corporation: As the primary Japanese partner, Roland helped refine the technical requirements, including the decision to adopt traditional 5-pin DIN connectors and opto-isolators to eliminate ground loops.
- Korg, Yamaha, and Kawai: These major Japanese manufacturers joined Roland to form the Japanese MIDI consortium. Their engineers contributed critical refinements to transmission speeds, operational codes, and clock synchronization protocols.
- Oberheim Electronics and Moog Music: While Tom Oberheim and Bob Moog participated in the early discussions organized by Smith and Kakehashi, it was primarily Sequential Circuits that drove the implementation on the American side.
The Launch of the Standard
Following intense technical negotiations throughout 1982, the collaboration culminated at the Winter NAMM show in January 1983. There, Dave Smith demonstrated the protocol publicly for the first time by connecting a Sequential Circuits Prophet-600 to a Roland Jupiter-6 using a standard 5-pin cable; playing keys on one instrument triggered the sounds of the other.
Later in 1983, the coalition released the official MIDI 1.0 specification and founded the MIDI Manufacturers Association (MMA) to manage, maintain, and protect the open standard for future generations of musicians and engineers.
