What Is MIDI Chase and Why Do You Need It?
MIDI chase is a feature in digital audio workstations (DAWs) that scans prior measures to locate and apply earlier MIDI events when playback begins midway through a project. Instead of only reading data that occurs after the playhead's start position, MIDI chase reads preceding note triggers, continuous controller (CC) values, pitch bends, and program changes. This ensures that your virtual instruments accurately reflect the intended dynamics, patch settings, and active notes from the exact moment playback starts.
How MIDI Events Work
Unlike raw audio waveforms, MIDI data consists of discrete instructional messages transmitted along a timeline. A note does not exist as a continuous stream of sound; it is triggered by a "Note On" command and silenced by a "Note Off" command. Similarly, parameters like the sustain pedal (CC64), volume (CC7), expression (CC11), and pitch bend are distinct, timestamped instructions.
If a playhead starts after an instruction has passed, a DAW without MIDI chase will not know that the instruction ever occurred.
The Problem with Starting Playback Mid-Project
When editing or mixing, you rarely play a track from the very beginning. You often position the playhead directly before a chorus, a solo, or a specific edit point. Without MIDI chase, this causes significant playback errors:
- Missed Notes: If a synthesizer plays a whole note or long pad that starts on beat one of measure nine, and you hit play on beat three of measure nine, the "Note On" message has already passed. The DAW ignores the note, leaving that section silent.
- Stuck or Missing Controller Data: If an orchestral passage gradually swells using expression (CC11) or modulation (CC1), starting playback in the middle will leave the instrument at its last known value or default setting, causing the volume or timbre to be wildly inaccurate.
- Sustain Pedal Errors: If a piano passage relies on a held sustain pedal (CC64) triggered measures earlier, playing back after that pedal press will result in short, staccato notes until the pedal is pressed again in the timeline.
- Out-of-Tune Instruments: If a pitch bend is drawn across several bars, starting playback midway can leave the instrument unbent or trapped at an incorrect pitch offset.
Why MIDI Chase Is Critical
MIDI chase prevents these playback discrepancies by analyzing the timeline behind the playhead before sound is generated.
1. Accurate Representation of Long Notes
MIDI chase identifies any "Note On" event whose corresponding "Note Off" occurs after the playhead position. The DAW calculates the offset and triggers the note instantly, ensuring pads, drones, basslines, and orchestral strings sound immediately.
2. State-Accurate Controller Values
Virtual instruments rely heavily on continuous automation for realism. MIDI chase looks backward to find the most recent value for every continuous controller lane and updates the plugin immediately. This prevents jarring jumps in volume, filter cutoff, or vibrato.

Without MIDI chase, you would be forced to start playback far ahead of the section you want to audition, simply to ensure all MIDI messages are caught. MIDI chase allows you to drop the playhead anywhere in the timeline and instantly hear an accurate rendering of the project.
Common MIDI Chase Settings in DAWs
Most modern DAWs—including Logic Pro, Cubase, Pro Tools, and Studio One—include dedicated MIDI chase menus in their project preferences. You can typically customize which types of data the DAW chases:
- Notes: Chases polyphonic and monophonic note data. Some DAWs allow you to disable this if you are triggering short drum samples to avoid accidental double-triggers.
- Controllers (CC): Chases standard continuous automation like expression, breath, and volume.
- Pitch Bend: Keeps pitched automation in sync.
- Program Change: Ensures the correct preset or articulation is loaded if you use program changes throughout your sequence.
- Aftertouch and Poly Pressure: Updates pressure-based modulations.
Enabling these options ensures that regardless of where playback begins, your instruments immediately match the exact state defined by your timeline.
