The Roland GS Standard and Early Commercial MIDI
The Roland GS (General Standard) was a proprietary set of hardware and software specifications introduced by the Roland Corporation in 1991 that revolutionized musical consistency across electronic instruments. By establishing standardized patch assignments, drum kits, sound variations, and built-in effects, GS solved the widespread issue of inconsistent playback across different synthesizers. This standard became the technological blueprint for General MIDI (GM) and profoundly influenced early commercial MIDI authoring by giving composers, game developers, and multimedia producers a reliable, universal platform for distributing music.
Before the Roland GS standard arrived alongside the iconic Roland SC-55 Sound Canvas module in 1991, the original 1983 MIDI specification had a significant limitation: it standardized communication protocols, but not sound mapping. Program Change 1 might trigger an acoustic grand piano on one manufacturer's synthesizer, a distorted electric guitar on another, or a flute on a third. This made distributing commercial MIDI files practically impossible unless the listener owned the exact same synthesizer model as the composer.
Roland GS addressed this problem by establishing a rigorous set of playback requirements:
- Standardized 128 Instrument Map: It assigned 128 specific musical instrument sounds to specific Program Change numbers, ranging from pianos and chromatic percussion to ethnic instruments and sound effects.
- Bank Select Architecture: Using MIDI Control Change (CC) 0, GS allowed access to instrument variations while remaining backward compatible with basic program changes. For instance, selecting bank variations on an acoustic piano patch could yield a brighter piano or a detuned honky-tonk piano.
- Dedicated Drum Kits: GS reserved MIDI Channel 10 strictly for percussion, standardizing the note numbers for individual drum sounds (e.g., note 36 for kick drum, note 38 for snare) and introducing switchable drum sets like Jazz, Brush, Electronic, and TR-808 kits.
- Integrated Effects Control: The standard defined standardized Control Change messages for on-board master effects, specifically CC 91 for reverb send level and CC 93 for chorus send level.
- Extended Hardware Polyphony: It required compliant devices to support 16-part multi-timbral playback and a minimum of 24-voice polyphony.
The introduction of GS completely reshaped commercial MIDI authoring during the early to mid-1990s. Because the Roland Sound Canvas quickly became the de facto industry-standard playback engine, commercial MIDI authors began treating GS as their primary target specification.
In the personal computer gaming industry, prominent developers such as Sierra On-Line, LucasArts, and id Software scored soundtrack audio specifically for Roland GS hardware. Composers could finally write complex, multi-layered scores using specialized instrument variations and precise reverb levels, confident that players with GS-compatible sound cards or external modules would experience the soundtrack exactly as intended.
Beyond gaming, the GS standard catalyzed the commercial "backing track" and karaoke industries. Companies could author standard MIDI files (.mid) of popular songs and sell them on floppy disks to solo performers, hotels, and schools. Because authors could rely on standard drum mappings on Channel 10 and defined acoustic sounds on other channels, a single commercial file worked reliably on any GS-compatible module.
While the MIDI Manufacturers Association eventually adopted many of Roland's concepts into the official General MIDI Level 1 (GM1) standard in late 1991, commercial arrangers routinely preferred authoring to GS specifications. GS provided higher sound fidelity, more expressive sound-variation options, and greater dynamic control through System Exclusive (SysEx) messages. Through these innovations, the Roland GS standard transformed MIDI from a fragmented studio-networking tool into a predictable, commercially viable medium for mass-market digital music distribution.
