MIDI Omni On vs Omni Off Explained

MIDI Omni On and Omni Off are receiver settings that dictate how a MIDI instrument filters incoming channel data. In short, Omni On instructs an instrument to respond to incoming MIDI messages sent across all 16 channels simultaneously, while Omni Off instructs the instrument to ignore traffic on other channels and only respond to messages addressed to its specific, assigned channel.

MIDI Channels and Message Filtering

The MIDI protocol transmits performance data—such as note-on, pitch bend, and velocity—tagged with a specific channel number ranging from 1 to 16. When multiple devices or sound modules share a single MIDI connection, channel numbers allow the sender to direct specific parts to specific instruments. How an instrument responds to these channel tags depends entirely on whether its Omni setting is set to On or Off.

How Omni On Works

When an instrument is set to Omni On, it disables its channel-filtering mechanism. Regardless of which channel the incoming message was intended for, the instrument will process and play it.

How Omni Off Works

When an instrument is set to Omni Off, it activates its channel filter. The device will only process MIDI messages that match its designated basic channel (or channels assigned in multi-timbral setups) and will discard all other incoming data.

The Four MIDI Modes

Omni On and Omni Off work in tandem with Poly (polyphonic) and Mono (monophonic) settings to form the four standard MIDI reception modes:

  1. Mode 1: Omni On / Poly: The instrument responds polyphonically to messages coming from all 16 channels.
  2. Mode 2: Omni On / Mono: The instrument responds monophonically (one note at a time) to messages coming from all 16 channels.
  3. Mode 3: Omni Off / Poly: The instrument responds polyphonically, but only to its assigned channel. This is the default setting for almost all modern synthesizers and virtual instruments.
  4. Mode 4: Omni Off / Mono: Each voice of a polyphonic synthesizer is assigned to an individual channel, allowing independent control over pitch bends and controllers per voice (the foundation of modern MPE setups).
