MIDI Guitar Pickup vs Electromagnetic Pickup

A standard electromagnetic pickup captures the physical vibrations of all guitar strings collectively and converts them into an analog audio signal sent directly to an amplifier. In contrast, a MIDI guitar pickup acts as a data sensor, isolating the vibration of each individual string to translate pitch, dynamics, and duration into digital MIDI control data. While traditional pickups define the raw audio tone of an electric guitar, MIDI pickups generate no sound on their own, serving instead as a controller interface for synthesizers, virtual instruments, and computer software.

Individual String Tracking (Hexaphonic Design)

The most critical physical difference lies in string isolation. Standard magnetic pickups blend the vibrations of all six strings into a single, combined mono audio stream. While fine for audio amplification, converting a mixed six-string polyphonic audio signal into accurate digital note data in real time often results in tracking errors and latency.

A MIDI pickup (often called a hexaphonic or divided pickup) features dedicated miniature sensor coils for each string. By capturing each string independently, the pickup prevents cross-talk, enabling dedicated pitch-detection processors to accurately identify chords, note-bends, and individual string velocity without confusion.

Audio Signal vs. Control Data

Traditional electromagnetic pickups generate an alternating current (AC) voltage via electromagnetic induction. This voltage is an exact analog representation of the guitar's acoustic sound, colored by the pickup's magnets, coil windings, and guitar electronics, and is meant to be amplified.

A MIDI pickup does not generate the final sound you hear. Instead, the analog signals captured by its individual sensors are passed to an analog-to-digital pitch-to-MIDI converter. This converter analyzes:

Output Connectors and Hardware Requirements

Standard guitar pickups connect via basic two-conductor wiring to a mono 1/4-inch jack, plugging straight into an amplifier, pedalboard, or audio interface.

MIDI pickups require specialized cabling and routing. Older systems use multi-pin outputs (such as standard 13-pin DIN connectors) to send the six distinct string signals simultaneously to an external processor or synthesizer. Modern digital MIDI pickup systems sometimes integrate the pitch-to-MIDI processor directly onto the guitar body, sending digital control data out via standard USB or wireless protocols directly into a computer or digital audio workstation (DAW).
