How to Split a MIDI Keyboard for Bass and Piano

Splitting a MIDI keyboard allows a performer to play two distinct instruments simultaneously by dividing the keybed into two zones at a designated "split point." This guide explains how to configure your setup so that keys to the left of the split trigger a bass instrument while keys to the right trigger a piano sound. You can achieve this setup either directly through your MIDI controller’s onboard hardware settings or entirely inside your Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) or virtual instrument host.

Understanding the Split Point

A split point is a specific note (commonly C3 or B2) that serves as the boundary between two zones on your keyboard.


Method 1: Hardware Split (Using Keyboard Controller Settings)

If your MIDI keyboard supports multi-zone or split functionality, you can configure the routing directly on the hardware:

  1. Enable Split Mode: Press the dedicated Split or Zone button on your MIDI keyboard.
  2. Set the Split Point: Hold down the Split button and press the key where you want the split to occur (for example, C3).
  3. Assign Separate MIDI Channels:
    • Set Zone 1 (Lower) to transmit on MIDI Channel 1.
    • Set Zone 2 (Upper) to transmit on MIDI Channel 2.
  4. Configure Your DAW:
    • Create two software instrument tracks: one loaded with a bass plugin, the other with an acoustic or electric piano plugin.
    • Set the MIDI input of the bass track to listen strictly to MIDI Channel 1.
    • Set the MIDI input of the piano track to listen strictly to MIDI Channel 2.
  5. Arm Both Tracks: Record-enable or turn input monitoring on for both tracks simultaneously.

Method 2: Software Split (Within Your DAW)

If your MIDI keyboard lacks onboard split capabilities, you can achieve the exact same result within any major DAW (such as Ableton Live, Logic Pro, Cubase, or Reaper) by filtering the incoming note ranges:

  1. Load Both Instruments: Create two separate instrument tracks—one for your bass sound and one for your piano sound.
  2. Restrict Key Ranges:
    • Open the track or instrument routing settings for the Bass track and set the playable key limit from the lowest note (e.g., C-2) up to B2.
    • Open the settings for the Piano track and set the playable key limit from C3 up to the highest note (e.g., G8).
  3. Adjust Octaves (Transposition):
    • Bass patches typically require a low register. If your physical keys feel too high, use a MIDI pitch/transposition effect on the bass track to shift incoming notes down one or two octaves (-12 or -24 semitones).
    • Ensure the piano range is set to a natural pitch register for your right-hand chords and melodies.
  4. Arm Both Tracks: Enable record monitoring on both the bass and piano tracks.

Once armed, the controller will automatically route low-register notes to the bass instrument and mid-to-high register notes to the piano, providing a full two-handed performance from a single keyboard.
